Descendants of Francis Littlefield

Generation No. 2

2. EDMUND2 LITTLEFIELD (FRANCIS1) was born 1592 in Titchfield, Hampshire, England, and died December 11, 1661 in Wells, Maine. He married ANNIS AUSTIN October 16, 1614 in Titchfield, Hants, England, daughter of RICHARD AUSTIN and ANNIS. She was born ca. 1596 in Titchfield, Hampshire, England, and died December 12, 1677 in Wells, Maine.

Notes for E
DMUND LITTLEFIELD:
The Planters of the Commonwealth by Charles Edward Banks:
Genealogical. Pub. Co. of Baltimore, MD, 1961, Pg 200:
[Came] To Boston, MA on the "Bevis", May 1638, with six children and two servants.
Edmund was one of the followers of Rev. John Wheelwright in Exeter as early as 1630 (Little 1909). He signed the Exeter NH combination on 5 Jun 1639. His wife, 6 children and 2 servants arrived on the Bevis in 1638.
Edmund obtained a grant of land from Thomas Gorges on 14 Jul 1643 and removed to Wells Me, following Rev. Wheelwright. Edmund is said to have built a saw mill, grist mill and the first house in Wells (Little 1909). On 5 Jul 1653 he took the oath of allegiance to the government of Massachusetts, along with four sons. These sons included Francis Sr. and Francis Jr. He was elected to try small cases in the years 1654, 1655, 1658, 1660 and 1661. He served on a committee to settle the boundary dispute between Wells and Cape Porpoise, and was appointed as the legal agent for the sale of liquors in Wells (Little 1909).
Edmund made his will 11 Dec 1661 and the inventory was made 24 Dec 1661; the estate amounted to 588p.13s.4d. He bequeathed his estate to his wife Annis and his children, including both sons named Francis. On 17 Dec 1662, Annis and her sons Thomas and Francis, Senior and Junior, made an agreement concerning the estate (York Deeds I).

Genealogical Research in England, 1913, NEHGR Vol. 67 pg 347:
2. Edmond Littlefield (Francis) of Titchfield, co. Hants, Exeter N. H., and Wells, Me, baptized at Titchfield 27 June 1592, died, presumably at Wells, between 11 and 24 Dec. 1661. He married at Titchfield, 16 Oct. 1614, Agnes (also called Anne and Annis) Austin, probably baptized there 1 Feb. 1596/7, daughter of Richard of Titchfield, the testator of 1623 , who in his will mentions her, her husband and their three children Edward, Francis, and Anthony Littlefield. With six children and two servants, John Knight and Hugh Durdall, she sailed for New England in the ship Bevis from Southampton in May 1638, giving her age as 38, although in reality she was 41. It is not known when her husband emigrated to New England, but he probably went thither with his elder son Francis before the rest of the family. He appears first at Exeter, where he signed the Combination 5 June 1639. He removed to Wells, Me., where he received a grant of land from Thomas Gorges 14 July 1643, and took the oath of allegiance to Massachusetts 5 July 1653. As he was his father's eldest son and heir, a settlement was probably made on him at the time of his marriage in 1614.
Titchfield is a most attractive old-world village. It formerly covered a much larger area, extending to Southampton Water and Solent. The church contains an ancient and beautiful monuments to the Earls of Southampton, one of whom was the friend and patron of Shakespeare. Titchfield Place, one of the seats of this family, was one of the abbeys dissolved by Henry VIII, but is now merely a picturesque ruin.

Combination at Exeter, 1639
Combination for government at Exeter, with the forms of oaths for rulers and people. Whereas it hath pleased the Lord to move the heart of our dread Sovereign Charles by the grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France & Ireland, to grant license & liberty to sundry of his subjects to grant themselves in the
western parts of America - We his loyal subjects, brethren of the church in Ecceter, situate and lying upon the river Pascataquacke with other inhabitants there, considering with ourselves the holy will of God and our own necessity, that we should not live without wholesome laws and government among us, of which we are altogether destitute, do in the name of Christ and in the sight of God combine ourselves together to erect and set up amongst us such government as shall be to our best discerning agreeable to the will of God professing ourselves subjects to our Sovereign Lord King Charles, according to the
liberties of our English colony of the Massachusetts, and binding ourselves solemnly by the grace and help of Christ, and in his name and fear, to submit ourselves to such godly and christian laws as are established in the realm of England to our best knowledge, and to all other such laws which shall upon good grounds be made and enacted amongst us according to God, that we may live quietly & peacably together in all godliness and honesty.
