2. HENRY² TIBBETTS (TIBBETTS¹) was born ca. 1596 in England, and died 1676 in Dover Neck, New Hampshire. He married ELIZABETH. She was born ca. 1596 in England, and died Bef. 1676 in Dover Neck, New Hampshire.

Henry Tibbetts and some of his Descendants by May (Tebbetts) Jarvis, San Diago, Calif., 1944, NEHGR Vol. 98 pgs. 57-61:
Henry Tibbetts, of ancient Dover, NH, (Dover Neck), the founder in America, of the Tebbetts (Tibbetts) family which forms the subject of this genealogy and the progenitor of the great majority of this surname who are of New England ancestry (whatever the various spellings of the name), was born in England in 1596 and came at the ae of 39 Years in the JAMES, which sailed from London 13 July 1635, accompanied by his wife ELIZABETH, aged 39, and to children Jeremiah ("Jeremy"), aged 4, Samuel aged 2, Rememberance, aged 28 (Henry's sister) (REGISTER, vol. 14, pg. 321). He died in Dover Neck in 1676, at the age of 80 years, having survived his wife Elizabeth several years. The statement has sometimes appeared in print that he had a second wife MARY, but this is an error.
The following brief probate record of his will is to be found in the New Hampshire Province Probate Records, Book 5, p. 18, on file in Concord: "1676 June 27 Will of Henry Tibbetts proved by Mrs. Judith Reyner. [She was probably the witness] Allow John Roberts an inventory of the estate. Lb. 207.05.00. Sworn to by John Roberts".
By some error the above probate record of the will of Henry Tibbetts, the immigrant, has been omitted from the printed volume, Probate Records of the Province of New Hampshire, vol.1, 1635 - 1717 , State Papers Series.
Where he first located is unknown. It was probably in Boston. He is said by Pope to have been a proprietor at Dover Neck in 1642. he settled at Dover Neck in 1643 where he was a farmer and shoemaker engaged in lumbering. He held various minor offices in the town.
He was admitted Freeman at Dover, 1653: 2 mo. 5 (REGISTER, vol. 4, p.247). He was constable 05 April 1653 and in 1663 "viewer of fences"; took the oath of office as "sealer of leather" for the town in 1661; testified in the case of John Ault [my note: his brother-in-law] against Capt. Thomas Wiggin in 1645 ("Piscataqua Pioneers", p. 177); had a law suit in 1647. He a planter, sold land in Dover to John Tuttle 6 June 1657; brought suit against Charles Allen of Dover for using certain lands of his; supported the jurisdiction of MA in 1665.

HENRY TYBBOT, shoemaker, Elizabeth, Jeremy, and Samuel embarked at London for New England in the "James," John May, master, July 13, 1633. HENRY TIBBETTS, aged thirty-nine, with his wife Eliza, aged thirty-nine, sister Remembrance, aged twenty-eight, and sons Jeremy and Samuel are said to have arrived at Dover, N. H., in 1635. In the list of passengers, Henry was styled "shoemaker." He supported the jurisdiction of Massachusetts in 1665. He received a grant on Dover Neck, called "home lot," in 1643, and a large grant "between St. Albans and Quampheagon"; was taxed in 1675, but in 1679, "Widow Tibbit" and son Jeremy were taxed in his stead. It was agreed by "Mary Tippit" and "Jeremy Tippit," her son, that her youngest son should live with his uncle Matthew Austin.

HENRY, shoemaker, Dover, arrived in the -James- from London the last week in Sept. 1635, ag 39, with w. Elizabeth, ag. 39, two ch., and Remembrance, ag 28, who came in Mr. Thomas Wiggin's service, m. John Ault, and with him sued Mr. Wiggin in 1645 for wages to 14 Dec. 1638, the date when she came to Piscataqua. Henry had one of the 20 a. Dover lots in 1642. Gr. j. 1651, 1657, 1659; j. 1653; sealer of leather 1661. In 1653 he succ. sued Philip Lewis for taking away cocks of hay from his marsh near Capt. Champernowne's farm; 'planter,' sold land to John Tuttle in 1657; sued Charles Allen in 1659; sig. pet. in 1665; taxed 1675-6. A record often quoted from N.H. Province records, but not printed N.H. Probate: '27 June 1676, Last will of Henry Tibbetts brought into court proved by Mrs. Judith Reyner allowed John Roberts an inv. of the estate amounting to 207,5,0.' Kn. Ch. Jeremy, ag 4 in 1635. Samuel, ag. 2 in 1635. Rebecca, m. 1st Thomas Nock, m. 2nd Philip Benmore. In 1659 her fa. deeded 100 a. to his sons Jeremiah T. and Thomas Nock.

Henry Tibbets, of Dover, 1643, came in the JAMES from London, 1635, aged 39, with Elizabeth 39, Remembrance 28, one of which may had been his wife the other his sister; Jeremy 4, and Samuel 2. In the ships clearance he is called a shoemaker. Where he first sat down is unknown. He supported the Jurisdiction of Mass. in 1655 made his will 05 May 1677 [sic]; in which he names wife and all these children, executor Thomas.

TEBBETTS, (Tebut, Tebets, Tibit, Tibits, Tippit, Tibbit, Tibbets, etc.,) HENRY, had a grant in 1643 of a house lot on D. N., bounded E. by Wm. Furbur's, N. by John Heard's, S. by Geo. Walton's, W. by the Common; had a large grant in 1656 of land "between St. Alban's and Quamphegar;" taxed in 1675; in 1679 "widoe Tibbet and her son Jerimi," were taxed instead; 12 Nov. 1677 "it is agreed by Mary Tippit and Jeremy Tippit her son that her youngest son shall serve his uncle Matthew Austin." Children--Jeremy b. before 1636, Thomas, Daughter (who married Thomas Nock,) and probably others.

Remembrance Tibbets, sister of Henry, married John Ault (Pope's Pioneers of Maine and New Hampshire", p. 206; Libby's "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire", Vol. 1, p. 68) of Oyster River (now Durham), who was sent to Piscataqua by Capt. John Mason on or before 1631. John Ault was born in England in 1601 (by deposition) and was an inhabitant of Oyster River Point in 1645.
He was constable, 1650. 1657; served on the Grand Jury. 1650, 1660; and was living in 1679.They deeded their land to their three daughters in 1669, 1672 and 1674.
Children:
1. Rebecca b. in 1641; m. (1) in 1660 Henry Hallowell; m. (2) 28 Sept 1665 Thomas Edgerly (Register vol. 34 p. 282) of Oyster River, who emigrated from England.
2. Elizabeth, m. William Perkins of Oyster River.

ALLT, or AULT, JOHN, Portsmouth, 1631, sent out by John Mason, the Patentee of N. Hampsh. liv. at Dover most of his days after 1640, in 1679 was 73 yrs. old. His w. was Remembrance; ch. John; Remembrance, wh. m. John Rand; and a d. wh. m. Thomas Edgerly. Sometimes the name is Olt.

Genealogical Items Relating to the Early Settlers of Dover, N. H., NEHGR, 1851, Vol. 5 pg. 449-450:
AULT, John was sent to Pascataqua by Capt. Mason, on or before 1631. He was born in 1601, (as by deposition,) was an inhabitant of O. R. and was living in 1679. His wife was Remembrance, who in 1645 recovered of capt. Wiggins wages for services commencing before coming to this country; the time being from March, 1638, to 14 Dec. 1638, during which time she appears to have come to Pascataqua. A John Ault "took the oath," 26 June, 1653, but whether it was John 1 or John 2 we cannot tell. John had children. John, (a John was born in 1661;) Remembrance, who m. John Rand, of Dover, and a daughter, who m. Thomas Edgerly, of Dover. This name is variently spelt on the Records, Ault, Alt, Olt.
