Jerome Kaisler (b. March 21, 1903, d. November 20, 1982)
Notes for Jerome Kaisler:
Jerome was the oldest son of Rudolph and Marie Kaisler. Jerome was born in Uhersky Brod, Moravia, Czech Republic. He was born on the day his father was arriving in Racine, Wisconsin after emigrating to the United States.
Jerome received his first Holy Communion at St. John Nepomuk Church in Racine.
He was confirmed on October 3, 1915 At St John Nepomuk Church in Racine. His sponsor was his uncle Jerome.
His education was concluded at the 8th grade level after graduation in 1917 from St. John Nepomuk School.
The 1920 census lists Jerome as being 17 years old and working as a core maker in an implement factory.
Jerome did not accompany the family to the family farm in 1921 but stayed in town to work. In 1921 he was employed at the Horlick Malted Milk Company as a laborer. In 1923 he was employed by the Piggly Wiggly grocery store as a checker and living at the YMCA.
He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1923 and served a two year enlistment program. He served all of his time in Racine, Wisconsin. He was honorably discharged in 1924.
Jerome married Ruth Creuziger in 1927. Ruth was 17 years old and pregnant.
The marriage took place before a justice of the peace in Waukegan, Illinois. Jerome left the Catholic Church at that time which was something he regretted and which put a strain on the marriageThe marriage was not a very happy or successful one. The couple was not very compatible. The couple had financial problems. Jerome could not earn enough money to satisfy Ruth. The Racine City Directories of the 1920's and 1930's show the couple moving to a new location almost every year. The marriage finally broke upon February 2, 1947, when Ruth divorced Jerome.
Jerome worked for the Nash Motor Company as an assembler from 1924 to 1927 and then for the Progressive Dairy Milk Company in Racine from 1927 until 1942 as a route man delivering milk to homes and stores. He first worked with a horse and wagon and then in the 1930's switched to a delivery truck. He left this job when the company ceased home delivery because of World War II restrictions.
Jerome then worked for Hoffman Wholesale Grocery Company from 1942 until he retired in 1965. He drove a delivery truck around Racine County.
Jerome married Virginia Mastis on November 13, 1948.They were married by Justice of the Peace Ernest Smieding in Racine, Wisconsin. The witnesses were Mary Wayo and Steve Mastos. This was a quiet affair and no members of the Kaisler family were invited. Virginia was 35 years old and it was her first marriage. This was a very successful marriage as the couple were very compatible. Virginia loved Jerome very much and did everything to make Jerome happy. Shortly after the marriage the couple purchased a home at 2200 Gillen Street in Racine. They lived in the home until Jerome's death in 1982. Virginia's mother lived with them for several years until her death.Th couple loved their home very much and took pleasure in entertaining the Kaisler family at Christmas time.
Jerome's hobbies were collection postage stamps and pencils. He had large collections of both. He also loved to dance especially the polka. Cooking was also his hobby. He loved to bake breads and pastries. He made excellent Bohemian kolaches.
A sad part of Jerome's life was that he was estranged from his two children after his divorce. The children sided with their mother. Several attempts by Jerome, Virginia and other members of the Kaisler family failed to heal this breech. Barbara move to the eastern part of the United States after her marriage, so her were abouts were unknown, Robert did live in the Racine area. Robert refused all efforts to reconcile with his father. This condition existed until Jerome died.
Late in his life Jerome was reconciled with the Catholic Church. He received the last rites of the church and was given a Catholic burial. His funeral was at St. Lucy's Catholic Church in Racine. He is buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Racine.
Jerry had light wavy hair. He had a full head of hair all of his life. He was tall and slim but under 6' in height. Like the rest of his brothers he was not overweight. His body was not overly husky or robust.
While he smoked in his younger years he did not in his later years. He used alcohol moderately. He was a very moderate social drinker. He was an even tempered individual and was sort of easy going.
