Paulus Guillaume PEETERS was born 10 December 1853 in Mollendael, Brabant Belgium to Petrus and Anna Maria [VANDERWEGEN] PEETERS. He was one of four children. His brother and sister's were as follows: Jan Joseph, born 15 February 1844 at Bierbeek; Maria Theresia, born 28 September 1845 at Bierbeek and Joanna Philomena, born 25 April 1850 at Bierbeek. Paul was the only child born in Mollendael. [I believe that this was probably a township of Bierbeek.] His parents were also both born in Mollendael, Petrus on 14 June 1814 to Joannes Baptista and Anna Maria [JACQMOTTE] PEETERS. and Anna Marie on 07 June1815 to Franciscus and Barbara [MEULEMANS] VANDERWEGEN.
Mollendael is located on the Dutch side of Belgium which is also called the "Flemish" side\\
Paulus immigrated to the United States on 07 June 1887 .He left from Antwerp, Belgium, sailing on the vessel "Northlander", arriving at the port of New York, New York on 19 May 1887. He was accompanied by his bride of barely two weeks. Paulus PEETERS and Anna Catherine WILLIO married 23 April 1887 at Bierbeek, Brabant, Belgium. Paulus was 34 years old and Anna Catherina was 26 years old at the time of their marriage. [Even in this day and age, I think they married at a more "mature" age, if you will, than what is the "usual"~!]
When I originally wrote this story in 1983, I had heard through "hear-say" that Paulus had traveled to America with someone, and his name was William WERY. Through my research and after locating the Ship Passenger arrival list, I found out it was his wife that he had actually traveled with. Of note here, I will add some of the findings' from 1983 so as not to loose sight of how intriguing and arduous this research can be at times ......... I knew that Paul had married either before he immigrated or shortly after he came to the USA. I had a good idea that it was before but to whom became the major question!!!!! On both his son's birth certificates', there were two different names under the listing for "mother"!!!!!! John PEETERS had Anna WILLO [later changed to WILLIOW] and George PEETERS had Kattie NELLGO listed as his mother. When I checked the birth certificate of George PEETERS at the Lincoln County Courthouse in Merrill, Wisconsin, I noticed that "V" had been erased and a "N" had been written in the same spot on the letter N in the NELLGO name. I had wondered at the time if this had been a spelling error and if in fact my great-grandmothers' name was Anna Katherine WILLIOW. Further research proved the correct spelling ...........
On the original marriage certificate it states: Paulus Guillaume PEETERS and Anna Catherina WILLIO were married in a civil ceremony 23 April 1887 in Bierbeek, Belgium. [I had received a copy of this certificate from Larry PEETERS, the son of John PEETERS, who was the firstborn son of Paulus and Anna Catherina PEETERS] Larry found the certificate among papers that were in a shoe box in the attic of John and Libby PEETERS home on Division Street, Merrill, Wisconsin. Larry had been cleaning out the house after John and Libby had gone to Pinecrest Nursing Home. The certificate was written in Belgium so I had a professional decipher it for me, and finally learned the true spelling of my great-grandmother's maiden name!!!!!!!!!! In 1890, Paulus and Anna Catherina along with their sons, John and Frank, relocated from Duckcreek [a small village near Green Bay] Brown County Wisconsin to Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin ........ they made that trip by horse and buggy! They bought a small farm on the end of State Street [right hand side]. The following is a brief description of the land transactions' that took place:
October 13, 1892 LCCH [Lincoln County Courthouse] Vol 25 page 206; one acre of land for $125.00 from William Ballschneider to Paul PETERS

October 13, 1894 LCCH Vol 44 page 490; land sale $125.00 from William Ballschmeider & A.F. Ballschmeider [wife] to Paulus PEETERS

February 4, 1894 LCCH Vol 44 page 490; land sale $250.00 from William Ballschmeider & Anna Franzesha Ballschmeider [wife] to Paulus PEETERS

April 20, 1906 LCCH Vol 89 page 587; warranty $975.00 Annie F Ballschmeider to Paul PEETERS

April 20, 1906 LCCH Vol w page 213; mortgage $375.00 Paulus PEETERS[a widower] to Annie F Ballschneider

*(NOTE) spellings of names copied as they were written in the records
Paul PEETERS owned 6 acres and 7 1/2 acres of land in the Forest Park Addition Ballschmeider's Park\\

I remember my father Harold telling me that Grandpa George and his parents first lived on the right hand side of State Street on the outskirts of town. An unfortunate event occurred, and the house burned down. .........Joyce [PEETERS] BERGHAMMER, a daughter of George and Marjorie [VAN RIPER] PEETERS told me this occurred around 1911/12 or so. She said George was coming home from the "40" [land owned North of Merrill on Swede Road] and he saw smoke coming from the house, when he arrived, the house had burned to the ground ............fortunately no one was home/or injured. Joyce said the family was forced to live in the chicken coop for a few months until the family could rebuild. The cause of the fire was unknown. From what Joyce remembered, the family moved across the street around 1912 and bought a house there. Grandpa George lived in that house the rest of his life!!!!!!
The shell of the house still stands today, although there is only one original wall left on the inside of the house. The house went through a major renovation after it was sold in 1985, after George passed away. I visited that house with my sister Dawn [PEETERS] SMITH and my Aunt Joyce BERGHAMMER after it was completed ..... you would never know that it was the same house that Grandpa had lived in!!!!!!
There were 5 children born to Paulus and Anna Catherina [WILLIO] PEETERS .......
they were:

*******This information was found in the church records at St. Francis Xaiver Catholic Church, Merrill, Wisconsin. The records listed the parents as Paulo PEETERS and Catharina WILLIOV. It stated that the child died at 3:00am of "Blood Poisoning".
Records searched at LCCH Vol 1 page 156 disclose a Death Record stating an "unchristened white male" was born 09 March 1896 in Merrill Lincoln County Wisconsin to Paul PEETERS and Anna Catherina and that he died 23 March 1896. "a 2 week old male", cause of death: Dysentery. C. J. Bynne MD. Buried at St. Francis Xaiver Cemetery.
In the original story I had been unable to prove the death date for Anna Catherina PEETERS and speculated that it must have occurred in April of 1896 as my Grandfather George had relayed to me that he was only 2 years old when his mother died. He would have turned 3 in June of 1896. I remember when I first started this research I asked Grandpa, "What is your mother's name?" He told me, "I don't know, I called her mother"!!!! "I was only 3 years old when she died". Further research was done using church records from St. Francis Xavier Church and I discovered the following information:
      Anna Catherina [WILLIU] PEETERS
      birth: 186 (?)
death: 05 April 1896 Merrill Lincoln County Wisconsin
burial: 07 April 1896 St. Francis Xaiver Cemetery Merrill Lincoln County Wisconsin
      occupation: housewife
      Church affiliation: Catholic
32 years old, cause of death: Childbirth
[Anna died nine [9] days after the baby]
[NOTE] above information copied as it was recorded in the church records.
Grandpa George told me that his mother died after the delivery of the baby. I am thinking that he assumed it was right after the birth of the child but according to the records that I have found so far, the infant died in March of 1896 and Anna died in April of 1896 ....[worth mentioning here is that in the medical field, there is a time frame after the birth of a child that is still classified as a death related to Childbirth]
Paulus and Anna were married only 9 years at the time of her death. [Of note here, I will add that I did make an attempt to find Anna Catharina PEETERS' gravestone at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery and was unable to locate it.] I talked to Father Peter at St. Francis when I checked the church records and he could not locate her on the outline of the cemetery plots. We did find Paulus and thought perhaps that Anna Catherina may be buried next to Paul. [A logical deduction, I thought!!!!] I then went to the sexton at the cemetery and he told me that either they did not put up a stone due to the cost, or that there may have been a stone that overturned and was covered with dirt and grass. He suggested that I take some type of long sharp tool and see if I could find my great-grandmother's grave, with the most logical spot being next to Paul PEETERS' grave. Sooooooo I did just that the next chance that I got.
It turned out to be a dark dreary overcast day around twilight, and there was a steady drizzle of rain ................ My mother-in-law , MaryAnn KAROW was with me and she held up the umbrella while I probed into the ground with my long sharp screwdriver!!!!!! It must have looked a sight to passer-buyers, because I suddenly realized that people going by in their cars were slowing way down to see what I was doing!!!!!! To my disappointment, I did not have any luck finding this grave site/stone, so as of this writing, I do not know where my great-grandmother is buried.
With the oldest child being only 8 years old and the other three children ranging in age down to the age of 3, Paul definitely had his hands full but I was told by Grandpa George that he had the help of his older brother, Joseph PEETERS. Together they managed to raise the children without too many difficulties. Julia was put in an Orphanage with the Nuns for a time during her childhood, because Grandpa George said that his dad did not know how to raise a girl, but he knew how to raise boys. I attempted to find out more information regarding the story of Julia going to an orphanage, but so far I have been unable to uncover anything.
My Aunt Joyce told me that George [her father] was 13 years old when he went out on his own, and also that he started smoking when he was 13!!!!!
Joseph PEETERS lived with Paul and the children until they were almost full grown and during that time, Paul and Joseph made a number of trips back to their homeland of Bierbeek, Brabant, Belgium for a total of 14 trips!!!! [They must have really missed their homeland to travel that frequently .... I wonder why they never took the children with them????] I was told that Joseph made one additional trip back to Belgium in 1939 and this time it was permanent, as he decided to stay in Belgium versus returning to the USA. Grandpa George told me it was because Joseph could not speak any English, therefore he couldn't make any dates with the American girls to find himself a wife!!!!!! At least that is what he said his father told him!!!!
One interesting story that my father Harold told me was that Paul had gone over to Belgium on one of his trips during World War 1 and that he overstayed his Visa. He apparently had to prove that he owned land in the United States of America before he could make his return trip. He also had to have a judge sign papers to advocate his return. I have written to the Passport Office and have received copies of the papers that Paul needed to fill out to facilitate the many trips that he took and the best part is that they sent me a black & white photo of Paulus PEETERS, and I had never seen a picture of my great-grandfather prior to that!!!
There was a detailed description of what he looked like ....... Paul was a man of short stature, he was only 5'3", had dark hair and blue eyes. His occupation was listed as "laborer/carpenter". Paul resided at 1013 State Street Merrill, Lincoln County Wisconsin.
[This is the same house that my Grandfather George lived in most of his life] It is located near the original homestead which I mentioned earlier that burned down. Paul had a chance to live with 2 of his sons, John and George. Joyce says that she remembers when Grandpa Paul lived with them. It was after George had married Anna SAEGER. She said that Paul would live with them in the summer and in the winter, he would go and stay at the "old folk's home" on Highway 17. Joyce said that Paul and Anna did not get along very well, Paul would say "In the "old Country", the women did ALL the work"!!!!! Joyce said she remembers that Paul would sit in his chair and play solitaire for hours, and that he would "spit" on the floor and overshoot the newspapers that she had so carefully placed on the floor just for the purpose of catching the "spit"!!!!
There was also a story that I remember my father telling me about my great-grandfather Paul, he said that often times Paul would go out to the country by himself during the winter months with just his horse, an old horse blanket and very little food. He would stay there for a few days to a few weeks at a time.
He would dig a hole in the ground and cover himself with the horse blanket at night just to keep warm. I guess. he would do this "just to have some time for himself"!!!!! At the time of his death, he was residing at the Lincoln County Home(*) located just outside the city limits on Highway 17. In those days, the people of Merrill referred to the county home as the "old folks home" or the "poor house" due to the fact that the majority of the people that stayed there had no way to pay their way. I do want to mention that Paul DID pay his way while he stayed there. He was a very proud man in that respect!
He paid $23.00/month, I have copies of the receipts showing that he did pay that amount.
Paul died 27 May, 1948 at the age of 94 years 5 months 17 days. [He died the same year that I was born, 4 months before my birth on 09 September]. Cause of death according to the death certificate was listed as Acute Heart Failure, Arteriosclerosis and Advanced Age. The newspaper obituary stated that he had been seriously ill for one month before his death. Attending physician was Dr. F. H. Kelly. Krueger Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Services were held at St. Francis Wavier Church with the Reverend Father David Coffey officiating. [Previous arrangements had been made to have a Reverend Father Peter Rice in charge of the services and there was not an explanation given as to the change in Ministers']. Paul was survived by his three sons: John, Frank and George. Preceding him in death were one son, one daughter, one sister and one brother. Interment was at St. Francis Xaiver Cemetery on 31 May 1948. Pallbearers included Louis COLLINS, Leonard COLLINS, George PEETERS, Louis PEETERS, Harold PEETERS and Dean BERGHAMMER.
[NOTE] There are 7 different spelling's for the surname WILLIO

Condition on discharge: Non Tuberculosis.
***ADDENDUM: (story typed July 1983, retyped with additions on October 1984, as told to Sharon KAROW by her father, Harold PEETERS)
There is a sad, but interesting story that my father Harold told me concerning the PEETERS family ……. The year was either 1916 or 1917, it was before his father George PEETERS went into the service. ( George went into the Army in 1918). As the story goes, George was a young man helping on the farm, and he was in the process of feeding the pigs. I am not sure if it was that he heard a commotion or had returned to the house after his chores were done, but anyway, when he returned to the house, he found that there was a fire in the house!! I guess they did everything that they could to save both the house and the barn but it was useless, and everything went up in flames. There was nothing left but the chicken coop. I can't imagine how devastating that was to the family. They had to start all over again from scratch. Where do you begin????
Well, "troopers" that they were, they made the best of a bad situation. That summer they lived in the chicken coop while wondering how they would piece their lives back together. Can you imagine their joy and anticipation when they learned that there was a piece of land for sale later that fall. Just up the road, a Mr. Gordon Like had a home and one acre of land for sale, so for between $500.00-$600.00 Paul purchased the land at 1013 State Street. This was perfect! Just enough for the family to make a new start!!! Paul had realized himself a lucky man, after all, he now owned a new house with an acre of land in the city along with 40 acres of land out in the country [where the "garden" is now located] and 17 acres of land across the road from where the family was living. Grandpa George later bought both the house and all the land from his father, Paul for $2,500.00, then later sold the land across the road in the early 1950's for $3,500.00. I guess Paul lived with George for the most part, until they couldn't manage him at home anymore, then Paul went to live at the Lincoln County Home on Highway 17, east of Merrill. The land across the road from 1013 State Street was at one time the very 1st park in the city of Merrill ... it was called "Balschneider's Park."
**** As of the date 27 July 1983 when I wrote the original story of Paulus G PEETERS, the "old County Home" out on Highway 17 was still standing, but barely!!! The County Home was destroyed/bulldozed down in the Fall of 1988 after there were rumors of Satanic cults making sacrifices inside the building.

Notes for A
NNA CATHERINE WILLIO:
Mrs. Paul Peters Dead,
On last Saturday night, Mrs. Paul Peters passed away after a severe illness of less than 3 weeks. On Wednesday, March 18, Mrs. Peters gave birth to a child. Two days later she called Dr. L.B. Collier, who found her in a very serious condition. She improved under the doctor's care for a time, but finally began to fail rapidly. Consultation was held and found that nothing would save her life without an operation, and that by operating, probably five chances in one hundred would be the best that could be expected. Consequently, an operation was decided on, the following morning, Dr. Collier, assisted by Drs. Walsh and Wittman, performed a laparotomy on her, which confirmed the diagnosis fully, as the pelvic organs which were removed were filled with pus. She stood the operation well and improved rapidly for two days, but her system was so reduced on account of her severe illness, that on Saturday night she died. Although on the day previous to the operation, her temperature was very high, at the time of death she had neither fever or pain, and passed away quietly as if going to sleep, death resulting from exhaustion.
Could she have survived twenty-four hours longer, the doctors think she would have fully recovered.
