Petition for Naturalization: 17 May 1911 Lincoln Co, Wisconsin Village OF Irma

The history of Northern Wisconsin written in 1881 lists what later became Courtland then Irma as the settlement of Union and States. "Union is a settlement partly in the Town of Merrill and partly in the Town of Rock Falls and consists of a dozen or so families who moved there from the prairies of Illinois. It is located about 11 miles north of Jenny and a road is being built to it. It is located on a hardwood ridge and they have made a good beginning. Some of the settlers there are: S. W. Munro, C. C. Munro, H. J. Munro, W. Spaids, G. Goodier Sr. and G. Goodier Jr.,. This makes the 12th settlement in Wisconsin in 1881 named Union. The village of Irma is located on the CMSTPRY in section 7, Township 33N Range 7E about 12 miles north of America on Highway "51". It was originally incorporated as the village of Courtland after a survey made on October 1, 1887 and recorded on October 11, 1887 by direction of the Milwaukee Land Company who were the promoters of the settlement.
The Wisconsin Gazetteer & Business Directory of 1893-94 says the Milwaukee Land Co. was a Milwaukee based concern with Hauman G. Haugen as commissioner and Chas. A. Padley as the General land agent with offices in the Mitchell Bldg. in Milwaukee. The Gazetteer describes the settlement as at one time being known also as Marietta and Courtland before it acquired its present name of Irma. In 1893-94 they stated has telephone facilities, a Western Union Telegram office and a population of 100. Business places are: Theodore Bratz--Saloon, C. R. Hall-Blacksmith, B. Kennedy-sawmill, H. B. Munro-sawmill and R. C. Winslow-Railroad and telegram agent.
In The History of Lincoln, Oneida and Vilas County, published in 1924 was this contributed article entitled "The Irma school District: stating this~~~~
"If you will let your imagination wander back to 1880 and take a look at our school district, you will find but 2 families living in the then virtually trackless wilderness here. Those families were those of B. W. Munro and Nicholas Jourdan. In the Munro family there were 4 boys and 2 girls and moat of the boys later took up homesteads in the district. The Munro family came here in 1880 to the site of the Old Rock Falls schoolhouse. Mr. Munro was forced to cut down trees in order to make room for the erection of his buildings, since at that time, all he could see was large trees and brush when he chose the site of the west Irma-Rock Falls schoolhouse. For his roof he had to bring his lumber up from Jenny by sleigh on the frozen Wisconsin River and the Grandfather Road. A stage route was soon established between Merrill and Tomahawk with way stations at Grandfather Falls and Grandmother Falls."
Mr. Munro had to rely largely upon wild game for their food and very little clearing was done during those first few years. In 1881 Mr. Munro homesteaded the land on which the present village of Irma is located. To one standing on the Main Street of Irma at that time, the only thing to meet the eye was solid dense forest. Deer were shot where now the Irma store stands.
Mr. Henry Munro later built a sawmill after which local people could then obtain the lumber needed for building their homes and barns instead of having to use logs or go way to Merrill to get it, as he did. Mr. Munro ran his sawmill for a time but later turned it over to his son Horace. In the June 6, 1889 issue of the Northern Wisconsin News is a notice that Chas. W. Mihills of Merrill, formerly owner and manager of the Merrill MFG. Co. sawmill was engaged to manage Munro's sawmills in Irma. Also the Northern Wisconsin News of February 12, 1891 states that L. Forsytne was operating the Munro sawmill that winter.
In 1884, Chris Kemp who homesteaded the present Eli Johnson farm sold the Irma School District one-acre of land to be used for construction of a school by Horace Munro, "Ham" Conner and Wm. Gray. Chas. Jourdan homesteaded the Fred Peterson farm and Horace G. Chase homesteaded the Wadack place.
In 1881 W. H. Middleton homesteaded the place north of Chas. Peterson where Swan Nelson lived. During the first few years that Mr. Chase lived there he used to walk the 12 miles to Merrill and carry sacks of flour back to his homestead at Irma on his back. Before the arrival of the railroad in the fall of 1887, fur traders came to the settlement bringing in the needed commodities, which they exchanged for furs.
Paul Hoffman homesteaded the Worew [? SP.] Edmund's farm. Hoffman and Mr. Carlson who homesteaded the John Samuelson place both built themselves crude log houses. [NOTE Carlson's cabin is the one on the Boys School property on the East Side of Highway "H".] Samuel Nelson homesteaded the farm just north of the schoolhouse.
In 1887 the railroad was extended through Irma on the way north to Tomahawk and Minocqua. The Gilkey & Anson Lumber Company logged off most of the area between Highway "51" and the Wisconsin River as did the W.W. Wright Lumber Company, thus opening this territory up for settlement and farming.
Thomas Solomon homesteaded the George Curtis farm, which was on the land previously logged by the Gilkey & Anson Company. Some other old settlers of Irma were Mr. Goodyear, Mr. Thorson, J.A. Johnson and Andrew Wilson.
The Irma Creamery was established first as a co-operative organization of the Dairyman in the vicinity about 1900. After operating but one year it closed down for a time, resumed operations again but later was taken over by a bank that was the largest creditor. In 1912 J. A. Newell purchased the Creamery and operated it with success for many years. During his first year of operation Mr. Newell had 48 patrons and manufactured about 30,000 #'s of butter. By 1922 he had acquired over 60 patrons and was making 70,000 #'s of butter from 294,414 #'s of cream that he purchased from his 60 customers for $21,742.50.
The Merrill Advocate of January 26, 1904, under the item of "Irma Notes" stated that Gill & Little have begun to ship water from the Pay Brothers Alta Springs at Dunfield in the town of Birch.
The Swedish Lutheran church of Irma, located east of the village on the SE corner of "J" and "H" today, was officially organized on July 12, 1907 in the home of Mr. And Mrs. Charles Peterson under the supervision of the Rev. J.A. Carlstrom of Merrill. The denomination had been represented here since the 1880's but its first religious services in the vicinity had been conducted in the home of Mr. And Mrs. Hans Peterson in 1900, being conducted by the Rev. Carl H. Maxwell from Merrill
The charter members of the 1907 organizational meeting were: Mr. And Mrs. Hans Peterson, Mr. And Mrs. Gus Nelson, Mr. And Mrs. Frank Carlson, Mr. And Mrs. Chas. Peterson, Mr. And Mrs., John Magnuson, Mr. And Mrs. Eli Johnson, Mr. And Mrs. Gus Peterson and Mr. And Mrs. Fred Peterson.
This church celebrated its 50th Anniversary on July 1957 with several of the original charter members being present for the ceremonies. The first service of this church were held once per month in the schoolhouse which was located across the road from the present church until 1915 when the congregation moved into their present church although the present church didn't get to be dedicated until February 7, 1923.
The Wisconsin Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1915-16 lists Irma as "population 100", [note same as 1893-94] located on CMSTPRY in town of Birch, 14 miles north of Merrill. The county seat and nearest banking point Wells Fargo Express telephone connections and Western Union Telegraph, Post Office with I. Malsin, postmaster. Business places were John Anton-Hotel, Wm. Bordman-Hotel, and Geo. C. Curtis- Cattle Breeder, Irma Creamery Co.-J. A. Newell Prop., Ernest Lange-LBR., Arthur Lueck-Hotel, I. Malsin-General Store, J.A. Schulz- General Store and E.J. Whaley Express & Telegraph and Railroad Agent.
The History of Lincoln, Oneida & Vilas Counties states that in 1924 Irma still had a population of 100.

      HANS FREDERICK PETERSSON
Hans Frederick PETERSSON was born March 17, 1845 to Petter HANSSON and Helena PERSDOTTER at Torgardsbyn in the parish of Lerdal, province of Dalsland, Sweden. Han's father, Petter HANSSON was born April 10, 1816 in Torgardsbyn, Lerdal, Alvsborg lan, Sweden to Hans OLAFSSON and Anna PARSDOTTER and his mother Helena PEHRSDOTTER was born May 15, 1823 in Hagbergarna, Krogstad, Sweden to Pehr HANSSON and Kajsa FREDRIKSDOTTER.
Petter and Helena had five children, listed as follows
Hans Fredrick PETTERSSON            born 15 March 1845, Lerdal
Anna Kajsa PETTERSDOTTER      born 11 November 1848 Torgardsbyn
Britta Maria PETTERSDOTTER      born 7 April 1852 Torgardsbyn
Paul PETTERSSON                  born 24 February Torgardsbyn
August PETTERSSON            born 18 July 1858 Torgardsbyn
While living in Dalsland, the family lived on a farm. Dalsland is comparable in size to one of the larger counties in the State of Wisconsin. Hans met and married his wife, Ida Sofia while still living in Sweden. The information that I do know of the family while they resided in Sweden is that the couple had nine children who were born in Sweden before they decided to move to America. Hans married Ida Sofia PERSDOTTER April 3, 1868 in Lerdal, Dalsland, [Alvsborg Lan] Sweden There children are as follows:\\
Anna Fredrika PETERSON      born 26 January 1869, Lerdal
Charles Johann PETERSON      born 02 September 1870, Lerdal
Mary Charlotta PETERSON      born 25 May 1874, Lerdal
Per Fredrik PETERSON      born 17 January 1877, Lerdal
Amanda Helena PETERSON      born 27 May 1878, Lerdal
Gustof Petter PETERSON      born 4 March 1882, Lerdal
Alfredia Sofia PETERSON      born 23 February 1885, Lerdal
Otto Albin PETERSON      born 1 July 1887, Lerdal
Hans Oskar PETERSON born 4 December 1890 Centralia, Wood Co. WI.

Hans Frederick PETERSSON immigrated 26 October 1887 on the ship "Thingvolla" from the port of Kristiania, Norway to the port of New York, New York arriving on the 6th of November 1887, he was accompanied by his eldest son, Charles PETERSSON.
I believe the reason they chose Wisconsin was because of the similarities in the climate, and the promise of a better life! They settled in *Centralia, Wood County, Wisconsin [*Wisconsin Rapids] prior to relocating to Irma, Lincoln County, Wisconsin. Hans had a friend that lived in Centralia, he burrowed money from him to pay for his and Charles trip to the USA. Ida Sofia and the rest of the children remained in Sweden. The first winter that Hans and Charles were in Wisconsin they worked in the woods in Wood County, Wisconsin. Six months after they arrived, Anna Fredrika PETERSSON arrived in Wisconsin. She was about 18 years old when she made the trip alone. It took Hans almost one year to repay his debt to his friend. He burrowed again, enough money to send for the rest of the family. Ida Sofia applied for immigration in Lerdal, Sweden on 10 June 1888. Ida Sofia immigrated the 20th of September 1888 on the ship "Thingvolla" from the port of Kristiania, Norway to the port of New York, New York, arriving on the 10th of October 1888. She was accompanied by her children as follows: Mary Charlotta, Per Frederik, Amanda Helena, Gustof Petter, Alfrieda Sofia and Otto Albin., Otto was around 14 months of age at the time of the trip.
Hans declared his intention to become a citizen on November 3, 1890 in the Circuit Court of Wood County, Petition for Naturalization was filed the 17th of May 1911 at Lincoln County, Wisconsin. Hans became a citizen of the USA on the 28th of August 1911 at the Circuit Court of Lincoln County, Wisconsin. [Certificate for Naturalization as follows: Number 186666 Petition Vol. 2 Page 66 Sub vol. 7854 Page 16, Lincoln County Courthouse\
Being a farmer in those days made it difficult to eke out a living for such a large sized family!!
They moved to Rudolph, a saw mill town north of Wisconsin Rapids. Shortly after, the last son Oscar was born, the year was 1890. Hans worked at a sawmill called Clark and Scott were he shaped strips of wood. During the winter months Hans would work in the woods in addition to the sawmill. The family remained in this area for about 1 1/2 years. During that time, the St. Paul Railroad was extended to Hazelhurst. The entire family moved to Hazelhurst and rented the largest house available. Sofia took in boarders to help the family income. Anna went to work at one of the other larger boarding houses as a cook. Before the move to Hazelhurst, Anna married Jon Magnus MAGNUSON on July 4, 1891 in Wisconsin Rapids. Hans and Sofia lived in Hazelhurst for about 4 years, during that time Charles married Thora KNUTSON December 25, 1895 in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and Mary Charlotta married Eli Wilfred JOHNSON in 1892 in Irma, Lincoln County. Anna, Charles and Mary had been confirmed in Sweden, but Amanda and Fred, then of confirmation age [14], had no such facilities available in Hazelhurst. Around 1894 the family moved to Merrill, Lincoln County, Wisconsin and Hans worked for the Stange Lumber Company for a dollar a day. Before the family moved to Merrill, they had saved about $200.00. This was used to purchase a farm in Irma from Gust Albright. The land was located in the Town of Birch, 3 1/2 miles southeast of the village of Irma on the Gust Lange Road. There was 160 acres with 12-15 cattle, chickens, pigs and horses. This was to become their permanent home, however, they did not live there until sometime later. After living in Merrill for 2 years, the family moved back to Harshaw in Oneida County where Hans worked in the sawmill until the mill completed its' run. Finally in the spring of 1896, the family had the opportunity to move into their own home that they had purchased in Irma. Hans cleared approximately 12 acres of land and developed his farm. They had been in their new place about two years when again they were to experience a bitter hardship. One morning in February of 1898 Hans and his three older boys, Charles, Fred and Gust had gone out to the woods to work. Sofia was home with Frieda, Otto and Oscar when fire broke out in the home. By the time the men had returned from the woods at noon the entire house and furnishings were burned to the ground. Thankfully Sofia and the children were safe. The few items they had managed to save were charred and ruined. Because they had no insurance, it was a complete loss. There was a small log cabin on the land that had been used for storage, this was to serve as their home until the following summer, when a new home was constructed. Hans and Sofia lived here until February 20, 1920 when they sold this land to John MAGNUSON. When Hans retired from farming, their profits were used for materials to build a small house. The house was constructed by his sons on the land that was owned by his son Fred. Fred married Minnie LUECK on January 13, 1902 in Merrill, Wisconsin. The 1914 Platbook for Lincoln County shows the following land that was owned by the Peterson family:
John MAGNUSON      Township 33 Range 6 Section 13.... 80 acres
Gust PETERSON      Township 33 Range 7 Section 6,22...240 acres
Charles PETERSONTownship 33 Range 7 Section 8...200 acres
Otto PETERSON      Township 33 Range 7 Section 17 80 acres

The PETERSON family had a strong faith. REV. Carl J. MAXELL, Pastor of the Swedish Lutheran Church of Merrill, conducted worship services in the home of Hans and Sofia PETERSON as early as 1900. The Bethany Lutheran Church of Irma was officially organized July 12, 1907 at the home of Charles and Thora PETERSON. Charter members of the organization effected in 1907 were: Mr. and Mrs. Hans PETERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Gust NELSON, Mr. and Mrs. Frank CARLSON, Mr. and Mrs. John MAGNUSON, Mr. and Mrs. Charles PETERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Eli JOHNSON, Mr. and Mrs. Fred PETERSON and Mr. and Mrs. Charles PETERSON.
Hans and Sofia celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on April 3, 1918. There are many pictures taken that day showing the family gathering at the home of Hans and Sofia on the Fred PETERSON property on that happy occasion.
Hans F. PETERSON died April 26, 1926 at 4:00pm He was exactly 81 years old. Cause of death as listed on the death certificate was a 5-year duration of Acromegaly. He was a retired farmer. Attending MD was William McCORMICK. The Rev. B.E. WALTERS officiated with funeral services held at the home at 1:00pm and 1:30pm at the church. Internment was at Chat Cemetery, Chat, Wisconsin [located 1/2 way between Merrill and Irma]. On the death certificate, Hans' father 's name was listed as Peter PETERSON.
