Graham of Windsor Co., VT, in Chester Twp. , who is shown in the 1800 Census as having a household of husband and wife each over 45 yrs. , two boys and three girls age 10 and under, one boy between ages 10 and 16 and two girls bet ween ages 10 and 16. Amanda was married at age 18 in 1815. Her first child was born the fol lowing year in St. Lawrence Co.(?) NY., possibly near Stockholm. She would have been about th ree years old at the time of the 1800 Census. She named a son (# 14) John A. Another sourc e indicates she may be the daughter of Edward Graham.

On the 1880 census, her daughter, Louisa, states that Amanda was born in Rhode Island.

1860 Census of Bloomfield, Winneshiek, Iowa, pg. 14, entry # 96 shows Samuel F Brush, age 40 , Farmer with $800 real estate and $200 personal estate, born in Canada West, with three chil dren in the household: Theod.P. (Thomas P.) age 17, Julia S. age 16, and Amos (Amza) A., ag e 11, all born in New York.
Living in residence #97 is his younger brother, Ira O. and his family. Residence # 98 conta ins the McMartin family of 7 young men between the ages of 20 and 34 and 19 yr old Julia. O ne of them is Julia Sophia's future husband, Daniel A. McMartin. Houses # 99, 100 and 101 ar e the Grahams, the Ableman family and the Polly family, all of whom eventually married into t he Brush family. All are from Canada by way of New York prior to arriving in Iowa and may ha ve traveled as a group. Not too far away in residences # 10, 11 and 14 are the Grandy and Co le families, also from Canada and New York.

Samuel was raised in Ontario until his parents moved to Stockholm, St. Lawrence co., New York . After marrying in Stockholm, he and his wife, Theodocia, went to Johnstown Center, Rock Co ., Wisconsin where in 1850 they are listed as a family of five. In 1851 they continued on t o Iowa. In addition to the children mentioned (Thomas P., Julia Sophia, Amzy A, Samuel and M onola) they had twin daughters who died as infants.

Samuel enrolled in the Civil War at Postville, Allamakee Co., Iowa on 25 Sep 1861 in Compan y C., 11th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers. He was mustered in as a corporal on 25 Nov 1861 . On 1 Nov 1862 it was reported that Samuel "died on the James River". He was on a vessel b etween Aiken Landing and Fort Monroe on the James River, having been recently liberated fro m the Confederate Prison Camp in Macon, Georgia according to the documents in his file. He w as "buried at sea" in the immediate vicinity of the battle betwen the Monitor and the Merrima ck, which had occured in March of that same year.

Sarah was counted twice on the 1900 census , once at her son Sydney's home where she was "bor n Jan 1826, NY, age 74" and then at her daugher Sarah's home were she stated she was "born Ja n 1828, Connecticut, age 72, widow". She did not recall where her father was born, but gav e her mother's birthplace as New York. On the 1880 census she stated her age as 47, making h er birth year 1833, but the place continued to be Connecticut. Her parents were both said t o be born in New York.
