Notes for Abraham (Abram) WANSER:
In his book, “The History of the Wanzer Family in America” published 1920, William David Wanzer (from the New England branch of the family) notes on Page 114
“Abraham Wanser was living in 1907 in Flatlands, LI and is an old man. His father's name was also Abraham Wanser. The former married Rebecca Raynor. One brother, Oakley, was boss mason at the Croton Water works. He had an uncle named William Wanser. The younger Abraham had thirteen children; two of are now living: Albert and Wilbur at Flatlands, LI.”
Based on the names of his children, Albert and Wilbur, who I have identified from other sources, this younger Abraham is my Third Great Grandfather. I base the information on his father and mother upon WD Wanzer's comments. My Abraham died in Flatlands in 1908, and I have identified 10 of the 13 children William David Wanzer mentions on page 114 in "the History".
The name Abraham goes back in the Wanshaer family to Jan Jansen's eldest son, born in New Amsterdam in 1649.WD Wanzer's History follows the descendents oftwo of his nine sons; his 5th son Anthony, and his 9th son, Jan. We know from WD Wanzer's book that Anthony moved to Flatlands and Flatbush from Manhattan. One of his sons, Abraham moved from Long Island to CTecticut in 1735 and founded the New England branch of the family. A quick review doesn't show any of these Wanshaers moving back to Long Island. Anthony's other son, Jan, is not traced in WD Wanzer's book. The children of Jan Jansen's 9th son Jan are only traced through one son, Abraham, and his one son Thomas, who lead the clan out of Long Island and into upstate NY, DE, and the Midwest. So, we have a gap between the Wanshaers of New Amsterdam and the Wansers (Abraham) of present day Brooklyn that lead to our family. In the 1790 census, the first census held by the new United States, there are no Wansers in Kings Co., but there are nine Wansor Families still living on Long Island (7 in Oyster Bay and 2 in North Hempstead). Almost all of these have the familiar Wanser first names,Abraham, Benjamin, Jacob, Joseph, etc, that are identified in our Wanser Family line, so we could come from any of them. The bottom line is that William David Wanzer does list Great Grandfather Abraham in his book, so the assumption is he did that for a reason - that we are a branch of the New Amsterdam Wanshaers. But, there is no clear direct lineage in his book as to how our Abraham, born in the early 1800s is related to Jan Jansen Wanshaer, founder of the clan.
1850 Flatlands census, Abraham Wanser, 25, single is living with the William (age 28) and Maria Raynor Family. Abraham's mother was Rebeccah Raynor, so it's possible William is a cousin. (Family # 122 on the census documents.
Families #123 and 124 are surnamed "White".Henrietta White, Abraham's future wife is in family #150).
