From the History of the Eldert Name.(pages 664-670) Families of Historic Lineage,1889.
"Stephen Coerte Van Vorhies, eldest son of Coert Albertse, of "Voor Hies", was born in the family homestead in front of Hies, in 1600.He married and had fifteen children, born in Hies. With his wife and fourteen of his children he emigrated to the New Netherlandss in 1660 as passengers on board the ship "Bontekoe" (Spotted Cow), Pieter Lucassen, Captain. They landed in New Amsterdam and settled at Flatlands, Nassau Island, where on November 29, 1660, he purchased from Cornelis Dircksen Hoogland an estate including nine morgens of uncultivated land, seven morgens of woodland, ten morgens of plain land, and fifteen morgens of salt meadow, and thirty-one morgens of cultivated land, paying for the same three thousand guilders.Like most of the early Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam, this family had no proper surname, and it adopted the name from the locality from which they emigrated, and thus the American family name of Voorhies came into existence. He was a magistrate as early as 1664, and a patentee of lands in 1667.His name appears on the assessment rolls of Flatlands in 1675 and 1683.His will is dated 25 August 1677.In 1675 he signed his name as Steven Koers.Died in Flatlands, Kings Co., NY, February 16, 1684.Married Willemtje Roeloffse, born Drenthe, 1619, died 1690.Issue, all in The Netherlands, no record of two children."
