Carvalho, Holdershaw and Kearns in 19th Century India

Updated September 5, 2000

Greetings fellow searcher, from one who is English, living in Australia and researching her ancestors from India. Carvalho was the maiden name of my orphaned grandmother Winifred Blanche. Her mother, Catherine Anne Holdershaw married Adolphus Carvalho (Sheriff of Belgaum) in Bombay in 1870, after her father John Thistlewood Holdershaw, an English gunner with the Royal Artillery, died. They had several children, one of whom was Stephen Adolphus Carvalho, who chose to go by the name of Stephen Adolphus Holdershaw. I am looking for anyone connected with these families. I believe that all Holdershaws in India at that time were related.
I am also keen to find out what happened to my g'g'grandfather's eldest son Edward Wolsely Fleming Kearns, who "went to sea" aged 15 in 1870 and about whom nothing more is known. His father was a missionary to India, from Dublin.
