Michael Patrick Keane was born in 1902 in Paisley, Scotland. At birth, his name was Cain. The roots of the family started in County Mayo, Ireland, with the name Keane.We believe my father's family left Ireland during the potato famine and moved to Scotland. The dates are still being researched. In Scotland, the Keane family was exposed to a great deal of persecution because of their Irish (Catholic) heritage. They changed the name to Cain to avoid some of this persecution.
When Michael Keane moved to the USA in the late 1920's, he married a Mary Gunn, from Kilmarnock, Scotland. Upon the birth of their first son, Stephen, they changed the family name from Cain back to its original roots as Keane. This occurred in 1935?
We would appreciate any information to substantiate the above data. Both Michael and Mary have passed on; but their children are interested in maintaining the family's roots.
