Notes for Samuel Marion Kelly: There is more information on Samuel.[SMKelly.FTW]
S. M. Kelly first appears on the Graves County, Kentucky tax rolls in 1854 which supports his birth year being 1833. He is on the tax rolls every year through at least 1875 which is the last year this researcher has viewed. In 1854 he is shown owning one horse or mare valued at $75 and one mule valued at $75. In 1859 prior to the start of the Civil War he is shown with 3 horses at $200 and 2,000 pounds of tobacco. The 1861 tax book is hard to read and much of the detailed information in the 1862 book was destroyed but in 1862 S. M. first appears as a land owner of 80 acres.
The 1863 tax roll lists Samuel Marion Kelly as owning 80 acres on Mayfield water course valued at $560, and two horses at $160 for a total taxable base of $720. It also enumerates 3 cattle, 9 hogs, 1 enrolled in militia, 1800 pounds of tobacco, 350 bushels of corn and 50 bushels of wheat.
In 1867, 1868, and 1869, Samuel's 80 acres is shown as being on Terapin Creek Watercourse. In 1870 his 80 acres are shown as located on Bacon Creek and valued at $800. 1870 is the first year children are shown in his household and in that year there are 2 between 6 and 20.
The 1873 tax roll lists 80 acres on Mayfield Watercourse at $800, 3 horses and mules at $250, 4 cattle at $10 (over $50), and an $8 gold watch for a total tax base of $1,068. It also lists one white male over 21, one qualified voter, one enrolled in militia, three children between 6 and 20, 4 hogs over 6 months, 1200 pounds tobacco, 300 bushels corn and 59 bushels of wheat. There is also another listing showing 20 acres on Terapin Watercourse valued at $140.
The 1874 tax roll is similar to 1873 but mentions E. Lee as the nearest resident to his 80 acres and E. B. Swan as the nearest resident to the 20 acres. 1874 was apparently a better tobacco year as he was credited with 3000 pounds.
The 1875 tax year shows him with 4 children between 6 and 20. It also notes one sheep killed by dogs and must have been a bust year for tobacco as none is listed but 125 bushels of corn and 50 bushels of wheat were.
