* The Kelloway's from Newfoundland*

Updated March 31, 2003

The English surname Kelloway is local in origin, being one of those names derived from the place where a man once lived or where he once held land. In this instance the name finds its source in the French Caillouet, the name of a place in Eure. It was given as a second name to refer to someone from this place and was then passed on as a hereditary surname when these became necessary with the growth of societies and the development of documentation in later Middle Ages. In English this name takes the form Kellaway or Kelloway and places in Wiltshire bear this name. Indeed there is record if a place with the name Kellaways in the Wiltshire Domesday Book, a statistical survey carried out under the orders of William the Conqueror in 1086, where it is written that:

Tytherton (Kellaways). Dunn held it before 1066; it paid tax for 10 hides. Land for 6 ploughs, of which 9 hides are in lordship; 3 ploughs there; 4 slaves...value...now 100s.

Documented evidence of this surname dates back to the twelfth century to one Philip de Chailewai listed in the Pipe Rolls of Gloucestershire in 1165. In the following century there is record of one Thomas de Kailleway in the Worcestershire Liber Feodorum in 1242.
