Family of John Kelly & Mary Ennis, Gormanston, Meath Co. Ireland & Alexandria, Glengarry Co., Ontario, Canada On or around 1840, John Kelly (age approx. 39), his wife Mary (nee Ennis; age approx. 37), and son William Aulton Kelly (age approx. 19) of Gormanston, Meath County, Ireland, settled in Alexandria, Ontario, Canada (possibly via Philidelphia, PA).
On 11 August 1845, William married Margaret Harney, daughter of Luc Harney and Margaret Carrol at St Raphael's RC Church, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada. Upon their marriage, Margaret's parents sold the Kelly's the front 50 acres of their land (at lot number 38 in the 9th Concession of the township of Lancaster) for 5 shillings. At that time, both John and Mary had pre-deceased William.
William died on 2 March 1873 (aged 58), being found dead after a load of lumber he was taking to the village had fallen on him. After William's death, Margaret moved to Alberta, Canada with their son John (born 1851 Alexandria, Ontario).
John went to Pincher Creek, Alberta (before his father's death) at the request of the Canadian Federal Government to erect a grist and saw mill. After bringing his mother to Alberta, John married Georgina Foisey (-1935)St Hyacinth, Quebec, (niece of Rev Albert Lacombe, OMI (buried in St Albert, Alberta)) in 1883. Amongst other things, John went on to build the first electric light plant in Edmonton, Alberta. John died in 1934, a year before Georgina's death.
John and Georgina had 8 children, the eldest of whom was my grandfather, George Edmund Kelly of Edmonton, Alberta (b.1886 m.Amanda Fickett, d. 1972).
I am interested in hearing from anyone who knows of this family or thinks they may be related.
