* Beales/Overby/Overbeys/Lackeys of VA/NC & Keltons of IL/IN*

Updated July 8, 2007

I am researching the Beales and Overbys/Overbeys who lived in Branchville, VA/Margarettsville, NC, and the Lackeys of Lexington/Newport News, VA, as well as the Keltons descended from Jemima Highman (1832-1891) & husband William Carrol Kelton (1825-1880) of Gallatin County, Illinois.

John Davidson Overby is my earliest Overby [born mid-1800's~], married to Elizabeth "Eliza" Frances Cannada. Some sources indicate he was born in Johnston County, NC. A letter written in 1979 by his granddaughter Eunice indicated he came from England with a brother. The descendants lived in/around Branchville/Boykins, VA & Seaboard/Margarettsville, NC. There were 4 sons: John David, Charles David, Robert Clingman & Will Overbey(my grandfather) and one daughter Rosanna "Rosa."

We believe Eli Beale is the son Elijah listed in Richard Beal's will, July, 1797. Eli married Nancy Ann Stamp on April 1, 1801 (also Silvia Johnson on Dec. 6, 1826, & Charity Joyner on Sept., 1829). He died in 1861. Their descendants lived in/around Branchville, VA. His great-granddaughter Romii Carrie Beale married Will Overbey (my grandparents).

The Lackey line goes back to Londonderry, Ireland, through Thomas Lackey, Sr. b. 1728, who moved to Rockbridge County, VA, in 1768, from Lancaster, PA.

Our earliest Kelton is William Carrol Kelton who lived in IL. The family would eventually settle in Carmi, IL and Posey County, IN area.
