Notes for Michael Goehrke:

It is thought that this man, Michael Goehrke, was actually a farmer himself, employing serveral workers in Mewischfelde. So far no more evidence can be found about further details of the life of his family. Many records, such as civil and military documents from the area were destroyed after WW2 and can never be retrieved. Michael's birth has never been confirmed and his death entry is shortened to the initials "Mich Gerke" and very difficult to read. No entry exists to proove the marriage to his wife, but in a certificate issued by the "Dom zu Marienwerder" itsself during WW2, these two people are named as the parents of their son Michael Goercke. Further evidence is very hard to obtain due to the condition of the church records today - at best they are barely able to be read on film.

The relationship to this Christian Gehrke is currently only speculative, but very few names in the churchrecords make it very likely that they were related. The fact that Michael Goercke's first son was named "Christian" makes it very likely that this Christian was in fact a brother of Michael himself.

2. Michael² Goercke (Michael¹ Goehrke)¹ was born 31 August 1712 in Mewischfelde, Kreis Marienwerder, West Prussia, and died 24 May 1787 in Gross Bandtken, West Prussia, Germany. He married Catharina Neumann² Abt. 1753 in ? "Dom"zu Marienwerder (protestant), West Prussia. She was born Abt. 1728 in Klein Bandtken, West Prussia, Germany, and died 28 January 1781 in Gross Bandtken, West Prussia, Germany.

Notes for Michael Goercke:

The most remarkable fact known about this man, Michael Goercke, was that at the age of 53 he received an unusual gift, given to him by the King of Prussia, Friedrich the Great himself, and thus resettled in an area only 17 km from where he was born into a farming community. According to the old document, Michael received "3 Hufen" of farming land, which is estimated to have been about 54 hektars in total. During that time it was an extraordinary size of a property, which would have needed farm workers to sustain. He was given this gift, as well as becoming a free citizen in the year of 1766, after he served the king in some way, at the age of 53, when he already had 5 children and a wife to support. Michael also received livestock, all farming equipment and the support of the local authorities in order to build a farmhouse and barn, granted by the the King - according to an old document which was sited in 1932 by Emil Schneider, but which is now no longer available. It is known that the Goercke family established their farm house on the property and lived in Gross Bandtken for about 200 years there after, but only assumed that they attended the same protestant church after their resettlement as well as prior to it. Both villages list their protestant population at the Cathedral of Marienwerder. The Goerke descendants remained in the area until the end of WW2, sometimes intermarrying in and around the tiny village of "Gross Bandtken", 6 km south of Marienwerder in West Prussia. The protestant cathedral "Dom zu Marienwerder", a large impressiv gothic and magnificient church, dating back to about 1300 in the centre of Marienwerder, seems to have played a great part in the lives of the Goerke descendants, where most where married or baptized over many generations. Its church books contains entries, some of which are still being investigated for being related to our family tree today. The cathedral survived WW2 and remains to be dominant, even though now kept under the catholic faith, in the town of Marienwerder till this day, today renamed to "Kwidzyn" with about 20.000 inhabitants. Gross Bandtken, otherwise known as "Pankendorf" after 1939, is called "Badki" today and both towns are now part of Poland since WW2. All cemetaries in the area have been destroyed or dug up since WW2 and few old houses still exist. The entire German population of the areas West Prussia, East Prussia and Pomrania was displaced in 1945 or fled the area after the Allied take over and became largely scattered across today's Germany as refugees. All property ownership or other valuable memories were destroyed, changing the lives of this farming orientated families rapidly over the years. The descendants of Michael Goercke still carry his surname in part and variation today, and have been investigating the origins of this family tree since about 1932. Relations to other Goerke families are still somehow possible, since the name occured in neighbouring villages Ottottchen and Wachsmuth in 1800 and onwards. The connection to any of these Goerke families would have been made before 1760, since almost the entire family tree has been able to be documented there after. Very remarkable is the large amount of female descendants or the death of all male descendants of our surname "Goerke" in this particular family tree. After 1800 across Prussia, "Goerke" was a fairly common surname, deriving from the word "hill" or "farmer". There are also villages of the same name located in the greater area, mostly of unknown origin.

Notes for Catharina Neumann:

Not very much is known about Catharina Neumann, although her death entry has been confirmed in the churchbooks of Marienwerder. She was about 14 years younger than her husband and died in 1781. Around the time of her death many entries of Goercke children are noted in the deaths register, but it is not yet known what caused these many deaths in Gross Bandtken. The surname "Neumann" appears many times over in the neighbouring village of "Klein Bandtken" - giving us the clue that she might have been born there and some of the baptisms show actual witnesses by the surname of "Goercke", indicating the families were closely related. At the time of marriage, her husband Michael Goercke lived in Mewischfelde, almost 17 km located to the north of Klein Bandtken and their marriage date or location is unknown to date.

Marriage Notes for Michael Goercke and Catharina Neumann:

Marienwerder's (Kwidzyn/Poland today) large cathedral forms a single unit with the castle, its belfry doubling as the latter's keep. Above the porch on its south side is one of only three medieval mosaics in central Europe depicting the torture of Saint John the Evangelist. On the opposite side is an elaborate baroque memorial chapel to General Otto Friedrich von Groebben, an 18th century soldier of fortune. The cathedral originates back to about 1300.

It is assumed that Christian Goercke died in childhood, although this has never been confirmed. His younger brother Jakob inherited the families farming estate, meaning that Christian could have only lived if he moved away and married before his fathers death and Jakob's marriage. The only evidence that supports this, is the appearance of a person by his name in a village nearby around 1786. Both entries could be one and the same person and the choice of first names for the first daughter could suggest a relationship to our family, so far with no further evidence:

The actual relationship with this man, his wife and son Martin to our family is currently only speculative. Around the time, when this Joseph Goercke lived in Gross Bandtken, our family name does not appear more than once in the village according to the church records of that time! The reason Joseph is thought to be Michael's brother is, the existance of both their sons named "Martin" - which they seem to have in common. It was a fairly common occurance of two brothers naming their children by the same name, usualy after an older relative or another brother that had died. You can see something similar in Michael Goercke's second and third sons who each had sons by the name of "Christian" after their older brother.

Not much is known about Jakob Goerke to date. He, along with his brother Johann, was a farmer and the farm was passed down to Jakob, who took over the farming estate, fathering at least 6 children. His brother Johann was thought to have married into another farming family and has at least 6 documented children to date - most confirmed to have died in childhood (see Johann Goercke). This is interesting, because Jakob himself only had 2 children who survived childhood and went on to have descendants. This suggets a very tough time in the Goerke family and for Gross Bandtken as well. It is also fascinating that both Jakob and Johann fathered a son by the name of Christian around the same time - sadly both boys died in childhood. This suggests that their brother Christian must have been a popular person in the family - or may have been dead around the time of the two boys were born.

Johann Goercke/Gercke did marry into another farming family as far as can be traced today. According to the deaths register of the "Dom zu Marienwerder" he had at least 6 children with Euphrosina Kalin (or Kalinin) over a period of 15 years. These children are mostly those that died in childhood, but further children that lived have simply not yet been found as yet, nor have their descendants. It is known that this family did live in Gross Bandtken and further descendants from this line have simply not yet been found, although the church records do not indicate the survival of any grandchildren to this couple to date.

Currently we have no final proof to show that Martin was actually Michael's son. However, at the baptism of his daughter "Justina" (a name that already occured in our family, being the daughter of Johann), the baptismal witnesses are the key to this current assumption. Present were on the day: Jacob Goercke (? brother of Martin) and Euphrosina Goercke (? sister in law), who herself had a daughter called Justina. This man, Michael Goerke, was known as a quite succesful farmer and although he did not inherit his father's farm, he managed to marry next doors then underaged daughter in an act of kindness... At the time, the Schumacher family in Gross Bandtken had lost the breadwinner and father Johann Schumacher, leaving the widow and two children vulnerable to vandalising frenchmen in the area during the war with France. Michael therefore married young Florentine at only 18, after obtaining permission from the custody authorities - and paying a substantial sum of money for the land to the widow Schumacher. Afterwards he was known to have managed the farm very well, increasing its size to an astonishing 120 ha! This marriage also lays foundation to further relationships between descendants later on to the Schumacher family (Florentine's brother) - see "Raikowski marriage". After his marriage with young Florentine Schumacher, Michael's fathers "Goercke farming estate" of about 54 ha was actually passed down to his sister Florentine Goerke, the only other surviving sibling of the 6 brothers and sisters at the time. She married a farmer "Floeder", but her daughter Pauline then married a farmer named "Schneider" who went on to take over the Michael Goercke farm. This lays the foundation between the two neighbouring families, who not only lived next door to each other, but also later intermarried each other as well - and had many arguments later on...

In a letter to the "Grundbuchamt" Anno 1816, Michael lays claim to the inherited property & farm of his wife and parents in law. The text is written in German by Michael:

"Ich besitze schon seit dem April 1808 eine culmische Schulzerei von 3 culmischen Hufen mehr oder weniger. Vor mir besass das Schulzeigentum der Schulz Johan Schumacher, welcher im Jahre 1806 den 13.11. im hohen Alter von 75 Jahren verstarb. Er hinterliess eine Witwe namens Dorothea geb. Wilm und zwei minorenne Kinder namens Florentine und Wilhelm.

Als er am 13 November verstarb, war eben der unglueckliche Krieg mit den Franzosen ausgebrochen. Schon im Monat Februar 1807 ueberschwemmten die Franzosen die hiesige Provinz, hausierten in dieser Gegend durch das ganze Jahr 1807 und die Witze und Erben des verstorbenen Schumacher waren durch die Kriegsuebel in der Bewirtschaft des Gutes so heruntergekommen, dass sie weiter gar nicht mehr das Gut bewirtschaften imstande gewesen. Ich habe mich darauf im Jahre 1808 mit der Tochter und Erbin des Johannes Schumacher verheiratet und bei der Regulierung des Nachlasses des Johann Schumacher haben die Witwe Dorothea geb. Wilm und der Vormund des minorennen Wilhelm Schumacher mit der Genehmigung des vormundschaftlichen Gerichts mir und meiner Ehefrau Florentine geb. Schumacher das Schulzenamt samt Inventar fuer den lasierten Preis von 2672 Mark, 6 Groschen und 14 Pfennige ueberlassen und darein eingewilligt, dass der Besitztitel auf mich und meine Ehefrau eingetragen werden moechte.

Nach Versicherung meiner Schwiegermutter Dorothea, verwitwete Schumacher, geb. Wilm ist auch der Erwerb vermoege dessen der Schumacher das Schulzengut in Besitz bekommen, den 18. Florentine Goerke was known to have inherited the Goerke family estate after her older brother Michael married next door's half orphaned daughter young Florentine Schumacher and took over their farm. Florentine Goerke did marry Michael Floeder, but their children have never fully been traced. Her daughter Pauline married a farmer named Schneider and their children carried on with the farm. This information originates from Erich Rudolf Otto Goerke, who told his children that these Schneider descendants next door to the Goerke family later become the ancestors to Johanna Schneider and also Friedrich Schneider, then married to the children of Ernst Goerke a few generations on. Thus the relations between both the Goerke's and the Schneider's both originate back to Florentine Goerke and her brother Michael Goerke and are in particular all true descendants of their father Jacob Goerke! This kind of intermarriage was not uncommon due to the importance of land inheritance in this tiny farming community. Interesting is that only Johanna Schneider and Rudolph Goerke have blood relations at the time of marriage despite this pattern of marrying within families.

Ernst was said to have been a heavy man of large build (250 pounds at the time of his death) and he was also a very rich man. From his father he inherited the large Freischulzengut of approximately 120 ha and carried on as a farmer. It has to be noted that his wife Lydia was born with an inherited deformity of the upper lip - a cleft palate. She brought 4000 Taler of inheritance into the marriage and was acutally an orphan at the time of her wedding. Despite this misfortune they produced 11 children, including two sets of twins! At the time of Ernst's death only 8 were still alive, but he was certainly known as the "rich Goerke". His wife suffered from many health problems later in life and passed her cleft palate on to some of her children. It must be noted that this has only reocurred in the descendants of those few children, which is remarkable in some way. Ernst was known as a big jolly man. The farming estate was eventually passed down to his son Emil Johann Goerke, who went on to have 7 girls, with only 4 surviving childhood. He, Ernst Goerke, left each of his 8 surviving children "5000 Taler" at the time of his death - the last big fortune the Goerke family ever knew till today. The Goerke property and house passes down to son Emil Johannes, who dies shortly after marriage and thus is passed on to his wife's second husband and their "Claassen" children. The Goerke Family was said to have received a payment of some sort for this transaction and Ernst's descendants move on into other areas away from Gross Bandtken.

"Rudolph married a member of the Schneider family - Johanna, his cousin secon degree. His two sisters Ida Goerke and Pauline Goerke both marry the same person (an uncle of Johanna Schneider), Friedrich Schneider. Therefore the two families were said to be close at least some time. Due to lightning or a storm, the house of the Goerke family burnt down one day and the Goerke's were forced to live with the Schneider's at their house (?Friedrich Schneider). It was only after the house had been rebuild and the Goerke family found a large barrel of smoked meat had gone missing, that "the two families started a bitter dispute, which went on for serveral decades"

Johanna and Rudolph purchased a farming estate in Tannenrode from Rudolph's inheritance. This is where their children where born and raised, but it is known that the couple later sold the estate and went on to purchase an even larger farm near Thymau/near Mewe. This is where Rudolph died in 1903 - leaving his only son Erich to take over the farm. It is known that Erich, who rather wanted to study buisiness & marketing went on to study "Agronomie"/ Agriculture in Danzig, West Prussia to please his father. After Rudophs death, Johanna moved to Zoppot and sold the estate - eventually not leaving any inheritance or land ownership to her children - partly due to the inflation in Germany. Rudolphs only son Erich, now without any land and after having sustained an injury at war, went on and became a lease farming manager, working for different large farming estates for other people in Pomrania until his death in 1945. Little is known about this family to date, apart from the fact that their descendants resided on the land until 1945 after WW2.

Elise Schnakenburg married her first husband, Emil Goerke, in 1887 who had inherited the large Goerke farming estate despite having trained as a brewer master. Together they had 7 children, out of which at least 3 died early on in life. She was extremely popular with her nieces and nephews and carried thge nickname "Tante Lieschen". After the death of her first husband Emil, she married another farmer "Franz Claassen" and had two sons with him. The first died as result of a fall, the second married and moved away. It is remarkable that her oldest daughter in first marriage with Emil also married a man named "Cornelius Claassen" - no doubt somehow related to Marie's stepfather. This man was said to have been a farmer, but lived further away in Montau/ Danzig. It must be noted that somehow, due one of these two marriages the Freischulzengut of Michael Goerke(2) was then passed down into the descendants of the Claassen family and remained in their hands until the end of WW2 - still next door to the other, older Freischulzengut of Michael Goercke(1), which by then was owned by a Schneider family descendant, named Otto. Both family's estates were eventually lost, when the entire population had to evacuate the area of "Gross Bandtken", renamed "Pankendorf" after 1939. Elise Claassen was burried in the cemetry Gross Bandtken.

Eventually she went on to have 9 children with this man who died, weighing about 250 pounds. Pauline went on to run a Woolstore "with her sisters" in Marienwerder in 1904 and outlived her husband by many years - 21 years to be exact. Together, the 12 Schneider children from Gross Bandtken/ Marienwerder not only went on to have many descendants, but also had further relatives still from the Freischulzengut, from which not only their father Friedrich Schneider originated, but also Johanna Schneider, their aunt and - my actual great grandmother! Little is known currently about this large farming Schneider family, most descendants today are thought to be located in Berlin and area.

He was shot as a civilian and later burried by a polish family who attended the grave for many years.. He married Anna Helene Liebe 1 July 1918 in Berlin, Germany, daughter of Arthur Liebe and Anna Hochmuth. She was born 13 January 1895 in Berlin-Lichtenberg, Germany, and died June 1994 in Hannover Buchholz, Germany.

Notes for Erich Rudolf Otto Goerke:

Erich was fondly remembered by all of his four children, after being injured in WW1 and marrying Anna Liebe, the daughter of a butcher from Berlin. His photo shown here, taken in about 1917, shows a strong resemblence with his fourth child and son Helmut Alfred Goerke. He fathered Helmut at the age of about 53 after already having had 3 children, who had at that time already almost grown into adulthood. The circumstances of Erich's death in about 1945 were seen as very tragic at the time, since he was a civilian. Uncornfirmed stories have been told by one descendant that he was shot in the neck due to an argument with Russian soldiers over the destruction of his chicken farm after WW2 was in its last days. As far as known, the family had planned an evacuation from the area for a certain day (?Thursday), because the end of the war was very near. Two of his sons were away serving in the war (POW, missing in action) at the time, his daughter Eva missing as a military nurse in action. Erich did not make it back home to the house, after walking home through the forest. This left his wife to flee into uncertainty with son Helmut, who was only six years old, to Flensburg via ship/evacuation - like so many war victims during that time. Much of the familie's possessions and photos went missing on that tragic day, when his wife had to leave without Erich into a future as a refugee. The children of Erich where later briefly reunited by the International Red Cross and partly resettled in different area's of West Germany, marrying partners from different backgrounds and families in areas far from Gross Bandtken (no farmers). Some of his grandchildren later migrate overseas, partly a result of the turmoil caused in 1945 - Erich's death and WW2.

Notes for Anna Helene Liebe:

Anna Helene Liebe is remembered vividly by anyone who knew her - in many different ways! She was born into a butcher family and determined not to marry a butcher, met Erich Goerke on a tram in Berlin, whilst they both carried an arm in plaster after injury. Moving to Nedlin/Pomrania from the city after her marriage to be with Erich was a strong and harsh contrast to her and many remember that she had few kind words for her husband, who was generally well liked. Anna was a woman of strong character, who outlived Erich by 44 years - much longer than their marriage lasted. She had a unique personality even up until the time of her death, when she suffered from dementia for the last 2 years of her life. Some say, she was unforgiving, some say she was unchangeble - she cared for each of her 7 grandchildren fondly and came to live with each daughter in law for at least a year, devoting her life to family, although she never really knew a working career, after finishing an apprenticeship in a baker shop in Berlin. Anna had a very strange relationship to animals all her live (serveral cats disappeared and were later discovered in the Goerke compost pile in Freiburg) and for some reason not known, she did not get along well with her daughter Eva for many years. She persisted telling some of her granddaughters that she had conducted 24 abortions in her life time due to the lack of the pill - and some of those stories have been in part varified by her daughter Eva. Till the age of 93 she walked virtually unaided (walking stick), was able to read without glasses, but was very deaf - she remained mentally very alert and only became confused after relocating to Hannover to live with Andrea Goerke, one of her grand daughters, whom she clearly favoured at the time. Despite some heart failure she was a bright and cheerful old lady and spent her last peaceful year in a nursing home near Hannover, where she received intense nursing care.

In a letter to her daughter in law, Regina (not translated, in the Original with all typing errors):

"Liebe Regina,

Wenn Dir das Ergebnis meines "Handworked" so viel Freude macht, wie mir die Arbeit Spass gemacht hat ist es Richtig. Sollte es andersrum sein dann ists auch gut, haenges in den Keller, da haben die kartoffeln auch was zum betrachten. Der Anlass zu dieser ganzen Geschichte. Ich wollte mich ueber den Winter nicht zu Tode langweilen und nicht wie so alte Weiber jammern, Hach wie bin ich einsam, keiner denkt an mich! Alles Quatsch. Vielleicht noch dreizehn Jahre Daeumchen drehn.??? Im Augenblick bin ich beim Stricken gelandet, mal sehen was dabei rauskommt.

Also Haengt Euch was auf und wenn es Euch nicht konveniert (Sprech ich nicht schoen auswaerts) dann verkloppen wir es auf dem naechsten Floh=markt. Aber bitte warten damit bis ich komme.
