| I am researching the WILLIAM J. CODER family which I have traced back to PA in the early 1800s. Rev. WILLIAM J. CODER (born about 1785) was a Methodist Episcopal minister on the Sunbury Circuit, Northumberland and Montour Counties, PA. He also preached and taught in Luzerne, Schylkill, and Carbon Counties, PA. About 1837/8 he went west to Tazewell (later Mason) County, IL. In the Mason County histories they credit him with being both a preacher and a physician. William J. Coder died on 15 December 1841 in Mason County, IL. His estate was administered by Robert Faulkner, Thomas R. Faulkner, and William Hibbs. William J. Coder and his wife (her name is unknown to me) had 7 sons and one daughter. I have located sons DAVID J. CODER, GEORGE H. CODER, ELISHA B. CODER, DARIUS L. CODER, and NELSON H. CODER. I have not been able to confirm with records the identities of the other children, but I have several possibilities. Charles Christian Coder, born in PA 1809, resided in Stark County, Ohio, Nebraska, & Kansas and died in Nebraska in 1871. He's buried in the Rulo City Cemetery, Richardson County, NE. Charles may have been a son of William J. Coder. William J. Coder's daughter may have been Rachel Coder born in PA, who married Robert Faulkner, born 1791 PA, who resided in Mason County, IL, and Hamilton County, IN. Henry Coder who lived in Nothumberland County and later moved to Stark County, Ohio, is a possible brother of William J, Coder. Henry's wife was ANN BRIGGS. GENERATION 2 William J. Coder's son DAVID J. CODER (born 1812 Luzerne County, PA) married first ELIZABETH FAULKNER in IL and they had 4 children: HARRISON CODER (died Civil War), ROBERT CODER (died Civil war), OLIVER WILLIAM CODER, and HARRIET ELIZABETH CODER. David and Elizabeth Coder moved from IL to Ripley County, IN, then to Worth County, MO, where Elizabeth died in 1858. In Gentry County, MO, before 1860, David married second ELIZA JANE WATKINS. They had 2 children: AMANDA BELLE CODER (Belle) and GEORGE BARTON CODER. David died after 1895 and Eliza died in 1932 in Arizona. William Coder's son GEORGE H. CODER (born 1814 PA) resided first in Danville, Columbia (now Montour) County, PA, then in 1850 moved to Shamokin, Northumberland County, PA. He married ALIDA PITNER. They had 8 children: HARRIET CODER, MARY CODER, JOHN N. CODER (died Civil War), WILLIAM CODER, DARIUS W. CODER, ABNER PITNER CODER, REBECCA CODER, and GEORGE CODER. According to George H. Coder's obituary, he was instrumental in establishing the Methodist Episcopal Church in Shamokin. George died in Shamokin in 1875 and Alida died there in 1882. William Coder's son ELISHA B.CODER (b. 1820, PA, d. prior to 1860 census) married on 18 December 1844 ELIZA WILLARD FAULKNER (b. 1822, IN). Their children were: FRANCES ELIZABETH CODER, ROBERT B. CODER, WILLARD WALLACE CODER, and SAMUEL NATHAN CODER. Elisha and Eliza moved first to Logan County, IL, them Moultrie County, IL. Eliza and the children moved to Nebraska, then Kansas after Elisha died. DARIUS L. CODER was born June 1822 or 1823 in Luzerne County, PA. He moved to Illinois with his family. He enlisted in the Missouri Mounted Cavalry and fought in the Mexican War. In 1849 he was a hand aboard a steamboat that traveled between St. Louis and Cincinnati. On 5 January 1864 at St. Louis he enlisted in the Union Army, the Missouri 4th Cavalry Regiment Volunteers, and was mustered in the same day. He mustered out on 5 October 1864 and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1865. William Coder's son NELSON H. CODER died 17 July 1840 in Tazewell (later Mason) County, IL, at the age of 12. I would be glad to share additional information with other Coder Family researchers. |
