Kellys of Skerries, Tynan, Armagh

Updated February 17, 2004

There seem to have been four Ulster O'Kelly septs. Two were Northern Ui Neill septs, one was an Oriel sept and the fourth was an Ulaid sept.

The Cineal Moen O'Kellys were descended from Muiredaigh, son of Eogain, son of Neill. They originated in Donegal and migrated to the barony of Strabane Lower, in northern Co. Tyrone, between the 14th and 15th centuries. In modern times 'The O'Neill' had right to one night's lodging from these O'Kellys when he was traveling in their territory.

The Cineal mBinnigh O'Kellys from the surrounding area of modern Derry City were descendend from Eochaid Binnigh. They advanced to Loughinsholin Barony in southeast Co. Derry near the present-day town of Clady. There they were noted as a sept of Cineal Eachdhaca. Today there are Kellys in the area around Draperstown. It seems they also moved into the bordering barony of Dungannon Upper in Co. Tyrone where they are noted as Chiefs of Cineal Eachaidh.

The Oriel O'Kellys were a sept of Clann Cheallaigh, and their territory is still remembered today in the Barony of Clankelly, Co. Fermanagh, although it stretched further east to Clones in central west Co. Monaghan. It appears 'The O'Neill' required billeting of 20 troops amongst these O'Kellys in modern times.

The Ui Eachach Uladh O'Kellys seem to have been an Ulaid sept centered in the territory of Clanbrassel Mac Coolethan in Co. Down. This may have been in the Warrenpoint district of Upper Iveagh Barony. These O'Kellys seem to have been associated with the inauguration of the Magennis Chieftains there.

I'm researching John Peter Kelly, a Catholic, born about 1847 in Ireland. He was the son of Peter Kelly & Anna Mallon. I believe the Kellys lived in Skerries, Parish of Tynan, County Armagh. Other children of Peter & Anna were Patrick, Thomas & Bridget, baptised at St. John's Church. The Townland of Skerries is on the Northern Ireland Border, not far from Middletown.

John P. had landed in St. Louis Missouri no later than November of 1876. He married Mary A. Heatherman (Hetherman) in St. Louis on Nov. 24, 1877. Mary was born in London England about 1847 to Irish parents, Denis Hetherman & Catherine Maloney. Mary's parents had married in London in 1845. I've read many Irish in London traditionally came from the Irish Province of Munster. Denis' father was a laborer named William. Catherine's father was Patrick Maloney, also a laborer who'd died before August 1845. The Hethermans were living at Middle Wharf, Adelphi, near Charing Cross in 1849, and Denis worked as a stone mason. By October of 1850 they'd moved to #1 Clarks Buildings in St. Giles North. They emigrated from England to the U.S. between 1850-1852. In St. Louis, they were originally members of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Soulard and later members of Assumption Parish. Mary & her younger sister, Margaret, worked as domestic servants in the 1870's.

John P. & Mary A. had one son to my knowledge, William Peter Kelly born on October 10, 1878. They were members of Assumption Parish on Sidney street in the Soulard section of St. Louis. Mary died at a young age, sometime after November of 1880.

John worked as a tinner at the U.S. Arsenal in St. Louis, and the family story has it that after his wife's death, he moved to Norfolk Virginia, where he worked in the Naval Shipyard (Portsmouth, VA).

Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I'd be glad to share whatever I have. Thanks for reading.
