The Kempts emigrated from Gairloch, Scotland to Nova Scotia as part of the followers of Rev. Norman McLeod. Around 1860 a number of ships of his followers moved on initially to Adelaide, South Australia, but some 9 months later moved on the Waipu, Northland, New Zealand where they settled. Three of four Kempt brothers moved to New Zealand - one stayed behind in Nova Scotia. |
