Received death certificate from Ogle Co., IL on November 10, 1995. W. is for Walter.
Truman was killed by a train in Leaf River, IL. He was a farmer of grain and livestock until 1935.
Received obituary from Bertolet Library in Leaf River on Truman Kendall from Leaf River Register. The librarian, Cheryl Campbell suggested I contact Edna Green of Pecatonica, IL (815-247-8647) I called her on November 30, 1995. Her address is 1158 Pecatonica Rd., Pecatonica, IL 61063.
Mrs. Green remembers Fay Kendall as a young man just out of school. Fay had a grocery store in Leaf River, IL. She lived on Truman Kendall's farm from 1922-1925, and had moved away before Truman was killed, just the day before her own daughter was born. She remembers Truman and Cora as well as Samuel and Abbie Kendall, but she was just a child. She believes that possibly the spelling of the name changed, but the two families may be related. She recalls that they all came from the Hagerstown, MD area.
She is curious about Joseph Kendel who, the story goes, was the youngest of the family. His mother died when he was about ten days old and she would like to know who raised him. The story goes that Joseph's father went to the Miami River, OH area where he met with possible fowl play.
She suggested I check early history of Ogle Co, Morris TWP. Believes early settlers were Rice and Wagner who married a Kendall/Kendel. Edna is the daughter (or grandaughter) of Jacob M. Kendel and Martha Kendel.
May 23, 1998, found Oregon Herald obituary.
LEAF RIVER MAN KILLED BY TRAIN THURSDAY LAST
Truman Kendall, retired farmer residing in Leaf River village met a tragic death Thursday morning of last week, when he was struck by a train on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific railway, his mangled body having been seen by members of a train crew lying beside the tracks at the west edge of Leaf River village. They reported the fact to the station agent and Constable Clayton Schreiber went with others to the spot indicated and found the body.
When Mr. Kendall left home Thursday morning, he remarked to his wife that he was going to John Motter farm, west of the village to look at some cattle. He failed to arrive at the Motter farm and is supposed to have bone to the railway line and wa struck by a passing train. The body was so badly mangled that it became necessary to definitely establish identity through proof of the clothing worn by the deceased. Mr. Kendall had for some time been in failing health. He is survived by the widow and one son, Fary Kendall residing in Elgin.
Dr. Jesse C. Akins of Forreston, county coroner arrived in Leaf River about noon of Thursday and conducted an inquest, the coroner's jury rendering an open verdict, affirming the cause of death as accidental.

My grandfather was named William Edward Kendall. b February 7, 1859 in Coffee county at Manchester, Tennessee. He was the son of Avery and Susan Jones Kendall. In 1879 he moved to Illinois, then to Missouri, then to klahoma where he fathered 8 children, all of them in Oklahoma. We don't now ything about his time in Illinois or Missouri. His children were named; Ruth Beatrice Kendall, DeWitt Avery Kendall, Susann B (don't know what the B stood for), Roscoe Calvin (my father was Sr. and I became Jr. - sorry to be so obvious) Edward Ross, Rozelma (middle name unknown) Chester Ware and Fred Warren Kendall, The reason I went through all that is because of your husband's middle initial of W. May have been a connection from grandfather Kendall's 10 siblings as the was one of 11 children. Their names were W.A.C. Kendall, Susanah Jones, Nancy Ann, John Thomas, Rebecca E. Phylander Young Davis, Frances Catherine, William E, Ben F, Sarah Jane, W. A. Kendall, James G. L. Kendall. Apparently his grandfather came from North Carolina. That is all that we have a record of relating to the Kendall side of the family. I hope it is helpful. It may go without saying but all the last names above were Kendall, I just didn't feel like typing that. Good luck in your search. I would be curious to know if the W. in Truman's name related in anyway to Warren. I know the Ware name came from my Grandmother Kendall side of the family.
Regards, Roscoe C. Kendall, Jr.
