Recruits in Co. C of 36th
When the rebellion broke out the Captain enlisted, recruited Company C, and 36th Indiana, went to Camp Wayne, was unanimously elected Captain, and was commissioned as such September 14, 1861.He went to the front with Company C and formed line with the Regiment at the log house at Shiloh on the evening of April 6th, advanced, took part in repulsing the enemy, was on picket duty that dark and rainy night, and next day to the end of the battle.The Captain continued in command of his Company on to Corinth, the long marches that followed, and back to Kentucky, Perryville, Wildcat, and on to Stone River, and on that Bloody Wednesday the last day of the old year1862, upon Major Kinley, in command of the Regiment, being badly wounded in the first of the Fight the Captain at once assumed command of the Regiment and commanded it to the end of the long three days' battle with wisdom and credit to himself and the Regiment,His official report of the particulars in detail.The peril to the Captain
was great, as well as to his men.One horse being shot and killed under him and the second one hit twice.Because of an injury to the breast, the Captain resigned October 18, 1863,and was succeeded by Livezey's Captaincy in the Company he was on detail on the Staff of the Brigade Commander,"Thirty years after the formation of this company,and 25 years following the cessation of hostility, the 36th Regiment met in New Castle in reunion.These 16 Survivors were present from Company C:One in which was L. D. Shepherd, of New Castle,In Company C there were originally 97 enlisted men in addition to the officers listed.
BLOODY BANNER SENT HOME
This was a letter home from one of the men."Dear Parents:Another, and oneof the most sanguinary battles of the ware has just closed, and God has again spared your boy.This engagement commenced with heave skirmishing on the 29th of December, and closed yesterday, the 4th, the rebels evacuating the town.They were repulsed twice, with awful loss, and are completely demoralized.Our men now hold the town. Our loss is very heavy and particularly the of the 10th brigade.Its loss is nearly 700 killed and wounded, one-third more than any other brigade in the army.The loss in the 36th amounts to about 130 killed and wounded, in my company the loss is one killed and seven wounded.None of the wounded are dangerous.One of the wounded was L.D. Shepherd slightly. Capt. Woodward tells of battle, and it said that Lorenzo D. Shepherd was wounded in the leg slightly.
