Notes for G
EORGE W. VERNOR:
George Vernor is a popular figure in several published histories of Nashville and Souther Illinois. Below are excerpts from three histories:

1. From a 1979 Washington County history by Helen A. Smith (herself a descendant of Gerge Vernor):

"George Vernor read law in the office of his uncle Amos Watts and was admitted to the bar in 1860, at the age of 21. He and Amos Watts formed a law partnership, which was disbanded eight years later when he was elected Master in Chancery. In 1877 he was elected County Judge which office he held until 1902. At that time he formed a law practice with his nephew Framk M. Vernor, who died about 1910. He continued to practice law until his death in 1915 at the age of 75.

"(George Vernor was) a distinctive looking gentleman with snow white hair, who dressed in a style that may have seemed eccentric, but which seemed perfectly normal to me, his granddaughter. He was a familiar figure in his silk hat, Prince Albert coat, white starched vest and carrying a gold headed cane...His funeral in 1915 was held in the courtroom of the Court House, where he had sat on the bench for so many years."

2. Additional details appear in " A History of Southern Illinois" by George Washington Smith, published 1912:

"Judge Vernor acquired his education prior to the inauguration of the public school. As a youth he took up the study of law with his uncle, Amos Watts, at that time state's attorney of the county...(Judge Vernor) associated with Judge Watts politically as well as professionally, and had his political tendencies greatly strengthened and his talent for organization and campaign work brought to the point of perfection. He possessed a belief in Democratic policies and principles that have ever received his support, and his faith was well known. Notwithstanding this he was elected in 1877. He inherited an extra year from the action of the Legislature changing the date of the election during his term, and in 1882 succeeded himself. He was chosen again in 1886, in 1890 defeated his Republican opponent again, as well as in 1894 and 1898, and retired from office in 1902 with a quarter of a century of public service to his credit and the longest continuous service in the history of the county.

3. An 1879 history of Washington County adds that Judge Vernor "cast his first vote for Stephen A. Douglas in 1860, and has remained a staunch Deomcrat ever since. He is not a member of any particular church, but inclines to the M.E. Church, as it was the religion of his honorable parent..."
