April 9, 1857 issue of the Carolina-Spartan newspaper:
DEATH OF SIMON WEST
Simon West left his home near Anderson Mill, on the 24th ult., to cut timber. Not returning home at night, search was made for him, and about 9 o'clock his lifeless body was found. An inquest was held next day, before Squire, J.C.Caldwell, acting as Coroner, with a jury composed of David Anderson, S. N. Evins, A. Alexander, John Snoddy, E. H. Willis, J. H. Vandike, Thomas P. High, David M. Brice, A. P. Caldwell, S. A. Caldwell, N. B. Roddy and William West Jr., who rendered a verdict that deceased came to his death by the visitation of God. Mr. West has many relatives and was in the 74th year of his age.
In the April 16, 1857, Carolina Spartan newspaper it states "Isaac L. West has petitioned for Letters of Administration in the estate of Simon West, deceased, given April 10 1857. The names of the children of Simon West and kiaaiah Boiter as well as the dates of their births were furnishtd to the compiler in a letter dated Oct 26, 1971 from Nannie Lou West.
