| Paternal Ancestors: My father was born in Randolph County, Alabama, where many of his predecessors lived since the Creek Indian removal in 1835. Randolph County, Clay County and Talladega County, Alabama family names include KEY, KNOWLES, ELDERS, MIZE, HOLLOWAY, LINDLEY, YOUNG, EAST, GREGG, KNIGHT, GREEN and FULLER. Most of these apparently migrated through South Carolina and Georgia. Maternal Ancestors: My mother was born in Etowah County, Alabama. Her predecessors had lived in northwestern Georgia, primarily in the Gordon, Pickens, Cherokee counties' area. Family names from this area are WESTBROOK, CORBIN, WOOD, GRISSOM, RAY, KELLEY, CHASTAIN, and TOWNSEND. There are records showing some of these folks came from South Carolina and some from North Carolina. My husband's Peterson line is from the Appalachian mountains of Yancey and Mitchell counties in North Carolina. We have done quite a bit of research on his PETERSON, HONEYCUTT, TIPTON and EDWARDS lines. Other lines include RENFRO, WEBB, MASTERS, and GARLAND. My husband, Troy, was the first of his Peterson line born outside these mountains since his Peterson immigrant antecedent (Tobias Peterson) settled there from Sweden prior to the Revolutionary War. Another interesting fact about Troy's lineage is the discovery of four, and possibly five, Tipton lines all going back to one Major Jonathan Tipton (Revolutionary War). The Tiptons and Honeycutts formed most of these marital alliances in his background, though there is one Tipton/Peterson marriage. His maternal lineage comes through the SCOTT, WOODARD, KYSER, PECK, MILLER, JONES, CLAY, HATFIELD families of southern Michigan. |
