Many were part of the fur trade in the Great Lakes region, Ontario and Quebec and Hudson Bay. They were voyageurs, courer de bois, government interpreters, lumberjacks, boatbuilders, Indian Chiefs, Medicine women and the first German Jewish settler in Michigan. My maternal research was easy as everyone had a Durant roll number and an 1870 Annuity roll number. Three bands are present in my anestry: SSM, Mackinac and Grand Traverse Band. The paternal side had at least one ancester was paid on the 1870 Annuity Roll. Our Metis identity of half breededness started soon after the first immigrants arrived at Turtle Island which is now called North America.
