PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION
AWARDED TO FORT WORTH MAN

One Fort Worth service man recently
received a Presidential Citation, and two others
have received bronze stars for gallantry in action.

At recent ceremonies at the U.S. Naval Air Station in San Diego, Robert L. Burris, aviation machinist's mate, second class, USNR was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for serving aboard the illustrious USS Enterprise. He is the son of Mrs. Lucy Burris, 2501 Columbus.

-------- Admiral W. K. Harrill -------- commander air fleet West Coast, who made the presentation related how the Enterprise and her air group "did sink or damage, on her own, a total of 35 Japanese vessels and shoot down a total of 185 Japanese aircraft", according to the citation. The honored airman is 31 years old.

The bronze stars have been awarded to S. Sgt. Cyrus W. Key, son of Mrs. Alma Key, Box 15, Crowley, and to T. Sgt. Frank B. A. Blackburn, husband of Mrs. Pauline E. Blackburn, 1700 Virginia Place, both for gallantry in action in France. Both awards were made by Maj. Gen. Walter M. Robertson.

Ima was born Sunday, September 25, 1910 in Diama, Oklahoma, to Travis Calvin Johnson and Cora D. (Thompson) Johnson. Ima was a life long resident of the Bray and Marlow area. She attended Bray Schools. Ima married Thomas (Tom) Jefferson Burris on November 16, 1929 in Chickasha. He preceded her in death in 1991. She worked as a practical nurse at the Talley-Walker Hospital for 22 years. While working at the hospital, Ima organized annual Halloween parties for staff, family and friends. Ima enjoyed listening to bluegrass music and going to bluegrass music festivals. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. Her most recent project, at age 97, was making over 90 "love" pilows. Ima loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Marlow Church of Christ.

Survivors include, Son, Tommy Burris of Marlow, 2 Daughters, Evelyn Brantley and husband Don of Sterling, Patsy Hector of Marlow, 12 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 22 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, four brothers, Rhoual, Carl, Wren, T.C., three sisters, Ethyl, Gladys, Ressie.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Victorville resident of 2 1/2 years Mr. John William Burris, "Bill Burris", 81, passed away from congestive heart failure on March 15, 2006, at Kaiser Hospital in Fontana. Born in Tuttle, Okla., Bill was a 46-year resident of California, and was formerly self-employed as a professional photographer. Bill graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1951, with a Bachelor of Science degree in photography. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the High Desert Church of Victorville. Bill retired from photography in 1983, and moved to Newberry Springs to become a pistachio nut farmer. In 2003, he sold his 20-acre farm and moved to Victorville to be closer to his daughters' and youngest son's families. Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maria A. Burris of Victorville; oldest son, Ivan Burris and his wife, Becky, of Las Vegas, Nev.; only daughter, Vonnie Alderete and her husband, Henry, of Victorville; sons, Ryan Burris and his wife, Donna, of Carson and Barry Burris and his wife, Debbie, of Victorville; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at High Desert Church, 14545 Hook Blvd. in Victorville, with Pastor Vaughn ULM of Newberry Community Church officiating. A reception with immediately follow. Graveside services will be held at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd. in Riverside.
