JOHN F. KILLORY, NOTED BALLPLAYER, AUTO SALESMAN
John F. Killory Sr., 83 of 219 Forest Ave., well-known former baseball player, manager and coach and a longtime automobile salesman died Sunday morning at the Brockton Hospital after being stricken in his home.He was the husband of Getrude V. (Gloney) Killory.
Born in Rockland, the son of the late John and Margaret (Fogarty) Killory, he was a resident of Brockton for most of his life.
He was a well - known baseball player in this district prior to and succeeding World War 1, having starred on both high school and college teams, as well several semi-professional clubs.
He was graduated from Brockton High School with the Class of 1912.He was elected captain of the Brockton High School baseball team in his senior year.
Killory attended Williston Academy, graduating in 1913 and for three years was a student at Tufts Dental School where he was a varsity catcher for a year.
He was a member of the Douglas Nine, St. Margaret's, Garde d'Honneur and Colonial teams in the old Brockton City League and was a catcher with the Hyannis club in the Cape Cod League for a season.
Jack Killory also was a catcher for several teams in the City Twilight League and later managed the Elk's Club in the Junior Baseball League. For many years, he was an umpire at local and district games.
He enlisted in the Army Medical Corps Oct 10, 1917 and was stationed at Fort Adams, R.I. and Camp Mills, N.Y. before being sent overseas where he served 14 months with the 4th Division which figured in the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel and other engagements,
For several years he was a coach and umpire for both American Legion and CYO baseball teams and coached Rocky Marciano in the St. Patrick's CYO championship team in 1940.He played for Hartford in the old New England semi-pro league.
He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church.
Killory was employed for many years by Hall Motors, Inc. in this city and in 1957 was named to membership in the manufacturers select Master Salemen's Club.
He was a member of the Brockton Post 35, American Legion,
Besides his widow, he is survived by a son, John F. Killory, Jr., of Brockton, two grandchildren, Mary E. and Ann L. Killory, both of Brockton, several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Mrs. Charles (Agnes) Doherty and Mrs. John (Nora) Buckley.
The funeral will be from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 9 Chester Ave., on Wednesday at 8 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Patrick's Church at 9 a.m.Internment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
