NOTES AND COMMENTS FROM JOSEPH E. KILLORY
My mother's father, Terrence Farrell is the easier to trace.I knew that Cardinal Spellman's grandmother was Ellen Kehoe, who was born in Kildavin, County Carlow.Since Grandpa Farrell's mother Catherine, was Ellen's sister, that placed her in Kildavin also. The church has no record of Grandpa's Baptism so it is likely that his parents lived nearby. His naturalization papers give his place of birth as County Carlow. They also show that he came to this country at the age of 16 and since he learned his carpenter/cabinet maker trade in England, he must have been 14 when he left home.
Once again, I have the date of arrival, May 25, 1863, but can find no Terrence Farrell on the ship which arrived in Boston on that date;- The City of Boston. There was a Terrence Farrell who came over with Patrick Farrell on the SS Tripoli in July 1868, but I believe the date on his papers is correct, so this is not he in 1868.
All of the above addresses were obtained fromthe Boston City Directories and Terrence listed himself as a carpenter until 1875 when he shifted to cabinetmaker. In 1876, he had a business address with a partner Behan. This is James Behan who was best man at his wedding. In 1870 he married Catherine Harrington who was really Catherine Arnold, but had changed her name. This is detailed later. They had six children of whom I could only locate four in church records, St. Patrick's, neither Dora or Peter was Baptized there and I cannot locate the church where they were.Mary and Margaret died as infants.
The family moved to Whitman about 1893 and he carved the pulpit in the Holy Ghost Church there.I do not believe that Thomas came with them, or,if he did, he soon returned to Boston where he died in 1909 at the age of 36.My mother worked as a stitcher (shoe linings) in one of the Whitman factories and Dora stayed homeand did sewing for people.Peter was younger and was in school; he went on to B.C. and as Helen remembers the story, did not finish before he married Lily.
Farrell's - 1880 census Boston - address 2 Jarvis Place, Catherine born in NH, Terrence age off by 3 years (1844)1847 is correct.Rest of information is correct.
Farrell's - 1900 Whitman census-The lack of knowledge of whoever provided the information is interesting. My grandmother, Catherine, was very much alive at the time and I assume living at home.Dora was doing dressmaking at home, and Peter, age 14, was in school. My mother was working in a factory. My grandmother's age was 45 based on a birth year of 1855 (the month was listed as unk) and her place of birth N.H.She was listed as having had 4 children with 4 alive when she actually had 6 and lost 2.She was listed as being married 30 years. My grandfather, Terrence, was listed as coming to the US in1867 while his naturalization papers say 1863, and his birth as 10/1850 when his papers say 5/10/1847.Dora is listed as 6/72 and my mother as 11/79 the latter is correct and I suspect Dora's is also.Peter is 5/86 and is probably correct.
