| Searching for the Kilkolly link. The name we believe is original to New Zealand. My ancestor who arrived with the British "57th Regiment on Foot" ( The Die Hards) to fight the Maori Land wars in 1861.John Kilkolly joined or was conscripted into the Army around 1859 in Ireland. He was illiterate and we believe the name was changed at time of joining.Research indicates the name was probabaly "KILCAWLEY" OR similar. The regiment came to New Zealand by way of India. His place of origin is given as Sligo, Ireland. His father, a farmer was Patrick and his mother was an Anna Findlay. John Kilkolly's occupation was recorded as a Carder. Family Names I am interested in are: Anderson, Thoressen, McNamara, Nielsen, Gilhooly, Moffat, Pasco |
