In Loving Memory of my Mother Elizabeth Josephine “Josie” Tench Smith May 26, 1923 - October 03, 2005
BLESSED BY THE BEST By: Hazel J. Kimbrell ~ August 12, 2008
As I sat talking with my mother, about our family history. She began to tell me of things, that became of great interest to me.
How her Grandpa Butler would sit in the front yard and whittle. All the time keeping a very sharp eye on the kids, both big and little.
The day that her Grandma Sal was working by the open fire so hot. She was running the cane mill when she looked at the kids, her hand it crushed.
The many home cooked meals Grandma Mandy made over an open fire in the fireplace. The bell she rang and laughed as the kids ran to sit on the bench next to her place.
I began to research and build our family tree her memory was the most valuable tool. She answered many questions and gave a lot of her knowledge to me, that was so cool.
As she would recall an incident from her past about things that happened when she was small. Mother would tell me the bits and pieces she remembered, I wondered if this was a tale so tall.
I would dig, search and ask others in the family until I got a somewhat complete tale. Some were outrageous, or to me they seemed I prayed “Dear God, don’t let her memory began to fail.”
As time passed it became obvious, even to me That her health and memory both were going to fast. Names, dates, places and events she gave that set me on a journey we could share of the past.
She introduced me to my 4th Great Grandfather And all the others, the great Aunts and Uncles. Tales of her and her many cousins and the antics they pulled, some even warranted a swat to knuckles.
We had many good times talking and sharing her with memories, me with a new find. I was blessed to have her for many years her love was great and sharp was her mind.
At times my finds would make her smile and even laugh and others brought tears to her eyes and made her sad. I asked her if she wanted me to stop, she always said “No” I enjoy doing this and the times we have had.
And she would always add, “I won’t be here forever…. When I am gone you keep digging up another old bone. I have had a good life and want to share the family history.” Let the world know “I Was Blessed By The Best.” And then you pass it on. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Thanks to all who have been a great help in assisting me in this labor of love.
