We are interested in obtaining information about our respective ancestors. Like most people we paid little or no attention to our elders when they were alive. Now that we are seniors we would like to be able to leave written family records for our grandchildren. The Kinneys came from Ireland and settled in Prince Edward County Ontario around 1800. Other families that have joined them in marriage are Cowans (Ireland), Werdens and Aylsworths (New England), and my mother's side the Vartys. Thomas Varty was the first. He and a son Christopher came from England to Duchess County NY pre-1776. He remained an U.E. and settled in Ontario first in Ernestown Township and thenNorthumberland and Hastings Counties. They married with Wagars U.E., Beattys, and Porters in the area around Tweed Ont. William Varty and his wife, Stella (Beatty) moved to the Picton Ont area after WWI. Their daughter, Mildredmarried William Kinney and were the parents of James R. Kinney The Brittains are believed to have travelled by ship from New York City during the War of Independence to the Canadian Maritimes, settling in Bristol N.B. and engaging in the saw-mill industry. Albert Brittain joined the bank eventually being moved to Picton Ont where he met and married Jean Miller. They were the parents of Rebecca E. Brittain Kinney. The Millers lived in Duchess County NY pre-1776. Elisha Miller U.E. came to Canada about 1783. He married Jeanette Campbell U.E., daughter of Alexander Campbell U.E., who had settled at Adolphustown Ont, after leaving the Argyle Settlement in NY. Elisha and Jeannette settled in Athol Township Prince Edward County on the north shore of East Lake. We are willing to share information about these families. | |
