The Kinney (Opsal) Home PageUpdated June 6, 2009 |
We are seeking information and contacts regarding the extended "Kinney" family who might be descendants of Nelson (Kristensen Opsal) Kinney, who was Nils, son of Kristen, and born on Opsal Farm near Trondheim, Norway in 1820-1840. Brothers may have included Ole, Jon, Gunner (Gunder) and Andreas. Sisters may have been Marie and Lena. This "Kinney" family is not Irish, but Norwegian. The name was adopted by Nils, when he came to live and work for a farmer in southern Wisconsin, in the 1840's. The reason for the name change has been lost, although there are many stories. Known descendants are spread across the country from New York and Florida, to the Midwest, to Washington and Oregon. My father, Raymond Carl Kinney, was the son of Carl John Kinney. Carl was one of the six children of Nils. Carl had ten children with two wives. Most were born and reared in Washburn, Wisconsin. My father and his brothers, Vernon and Harold, moved to Minneapolis during the 1930's, to find work. Other siblings moved to the Pacific Northwest. My mother is Marjorie Evelyn Coleman, originally of Ashland, Wisconsin, daughter of Hale Sylvester Coleman. We are also Looking for ancestor/descendants with the names COLEMAN, MIARS, PRATT, RICHARDSON, ARMSTRONG and ROBINSON, with any connection to Minnesota towns of Anoka, Champlin and Minneapolis, and the Wisconsin town of Ashland. My grandmother on my mother's side was Isabelle Armstrong (d. 1918), who I believe was the daughter of a Samuel McGinley Armstrong. My grandfather was Hale Sylvester Coleman, son of Seth Richardson Coleman. The Coleman's, Miars', Pratt's and Richardson's were of Maine, near and around Vassalboro, in the late 1800's. If this is a familiar story to you, drop me a note. William M. Kinney, Sr. - Minneapolis, MN USA billkinney@comcast.net |
