Notes for Christine Anderson:
Needham Chronicle story, 6/14/1902:
The community was shocked last weekend by a sad accident at Dr. John T. Simpson's, Highlandville, as the result of which Mrs. Simpson lost her life. The doctor and Miss Hope Simpson retired early Friday evening, before Mrs. Simpson. About 10 o'clock the doctor was awakened by his dog jumping frantically on the bed, pulling off the bed clothes and moaning piteously. The doctor saw an unusually bright light in the rear of the staircase, and rushing down stairs found Mrs. Simpson enveloped in flames from head to foot. Just then L. O'Brien and John Graham the blacksmith, who had been attracted by the blaze, rushed in and assisted the doctor in extinguishing the flames, but it was too late to save her life. She suffered intense agonies, and was at once removed to the Newton Hospital, where she died at 6:55 on Saturday evening.
From the position of the lamps, it is believed that one of them was either upset or exploded and that it was from this that the light summer dress she wore caught fire.
Mrs. Simpson was only 32 years of age, and leaves a daughter, Hope. She has been in poor health for over two years, as the result of a carriage accident in New Hampshire. She was much esteemed by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance.
The funeral was at Christ Church, Tuesday morning, the church being filled with friends, many coming from Newton and Boston. The full Episcopal funeral service was read by the Rev. F. Pember. the choir singing "Lead, Kindly Light," "Forever with the Lord" and "Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace." The floral tributes were beautiful. The interment was at Needham Cemetery.
Gravestone inscription ..."Loved by all that knew her in life. One of God's noblest of women, a true wife, a gentle, affectionate, and indulgent mother."
