MY PERSONAL WEB PAGE (SEE LINK BELOW) HAS A SEARCHABLE GEDCOM FILE AND SURNAME LISTING AS AT MARCH 2003.

My interest is in the following names.

KIRKMAN, KIRCKMAN, KIRCHMANN and KILCHMANN.
Other linked names (in no particular order) are:
MANN: SCHOLEY; SPEDDING; PASSEY; PIERCEY; HISCOCK; BRETT; HENDERSON and many, many more...

There are more than 5000 individuals in my database - many thanks to those who have contributed their data. Many of these records were electronically transmitted to me and I cannot vouch for the veracity of the information. If you are aware of any errors please contact me with amendments. I have adopted the 'Private' labelling format for individuals who may be living.

The origins of my family circa 1600's are from Switzerland (with the spelling Kilchmann) and later Bischweiler, Alsace, where the name changed to Kirchmann. The name means the same in all languages "Man of the Church".

Jacob Kirchmann came to London, England in the early 1730's to work as a foreman to the harpsichord manufacturer, Hermann Tabel. When Tabel died Jacob married Hermann's widow and
took control of the business. Around 1773, having no children of his own, he asked his nephew Abraham to come from Bischweiler and join him as a partner in the business.

Their business was very successful and later moved on to making pianofortes where they rivalled with the equally renowned Broadwood company. The Kirkman business was famous in its time and provided instruments to Charlotte, Queen of George III and to Thomas Jefferson in America.

I was fortunate to find many records through WFT Vol 2 4487 and am grateful to those who contributed to it. I also have much information from historical and literary sources and many records gathered from people worldwide who have contacted me through this page.If you want to share information, or if I can assist with your research, please e-mail me at the contact address above.

Another site I can also recommend is Russ Kirkman's Web page at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~kirkman/
His page has many other links to other Kirkman family sites which may be of interest to you if this page isn't. Give it a try.
