Letter to Mrs. Joseph Stelle
Undated

Dear Cousin,

I received your much wellcome letter, and was vary much surprised when I opened it. I wondered who knew me in Virginia. Yes, I think I rote you a letter many years ago, and never received any answer. You are asking about your people. I can tell you that your grandfather Robert Wilson has the youngest daughter alive yet but the rest of his family are all dead. Same as I am the last child of my father and mothers family that is living.

I had 4 brothers: William Franklin the oldest brother you speak of. James Shepard(?), Charles, and George the youngest. I had 3 sisters Catharin Wilson Sherman. Mary E. L. Wilson Bliss. Hir husband Orma(?) Bliss visited your mother. She was sick at the time he was thair. The next older sister than I was Martha J. Wilson Oliver. She was about 6 years older than I. One little brother born and dies before I was born. Yes, I knew your mother well. She lived at my fathers home for a while. After Uncle Robert Wilson died my father, Edward G. Wilson, went to St. Clair County where your grandfather and mother lived and brought your mother and your Aunt Kate Miner here to live. I don't know now about why unless thair mother could not keep them, if she was cruel to them I don't remember. Kate lived with my sister Mary Bliss and Orma until she was about 18 or 20, then she worked out. Your mother lived on a place my father bought and worked. After a while kept house than I think father had hir help to run the place and finally I think an uncle came to Michigan a visiting and she went to NJ with him and lived at Aunt Meriah Breece's.

I received a card from Iva Lambert. She is your grandfather Wilson's granddaughter and Lena Wilson's daughter-your step grandmother's oldest child. Lena is dead the next one was your Uncle Fred Wilson the youngest child was Mary Wilson. She is all the one than is left. Your step grandmother she was a German woman. I expect she had some time with 6 children after your grandpa died and 2 sets of children that is about the way it goes. Your mothers brother J. Wilson went up north of whare your grandpa lived and went to work. He was here on a visit but did not stay so vary long.

My Grandfather Wilson's name was Henry. There was 14 children in his family. His first wife had 4 I think. I think your grandfather was the oldest and my father Edward G. was the next and Aunt Mary Wilson Wooding was the youngest and Father usto speak of Hetty Wilson. I think she was un own sister and the rest was the step grandmother's children. I halve got a paper some whare and I will look it up and send all than to you. I can't find it this morning.

I will tell you I am a second cousin to you and Mary Wilson in the east part of this state is second cousin and John Miner is second cousin. Thair children would be 3 cousins to you. I will give you Iva Lambert's address. She is your Aunt Lena's daughter. So she is your second cousin. Hir address is Goodels Michigan. You tell hir you are hir Aunt Kate Miner's niece and who your mother was and tell hir to send you Aunt Mary's address. Hir name is Fritz, once she married. I have no more time now before the mail man comes.

Well, I missed the mail man. I halve found the paper that Grandfather Wilson's family births are written down on so I will send the letter tomorrow. I did not receive your letter until last Saturday so I could not answer it any sooner. I am living all a lone so far this winter out on my farm 8 miles northwest of Kalamazoo. Have lived here over 45 years. I lost 2 of my small children before we moved hear a little girl 5 years and 5 months old a little boy 2 years and 5 months the little girl was buried at night and the boy the next morning. They died with scarlet fever. Besides I had 2 other children halve it. They had it in a malign form. And cince we move hear in 1900 and I lost a son nearly 21 years old. He had the diptherea and perallices of the heart took him and nearly 16 years ago next to my youngest daughter died with the flew and pneumonia and child's birth hir baby was an 8 months and that died. She left 3 small children besides and 15 years ago the last of next March I went to town and when I came home after dark I found my husband in his chair dead. He had been sick the night before but was around the house and out doors sawing some wood that day after I left for town. He had a heart attact he had his coat on and his cap just ready to fall off his head and his pipe lay on his coat so he had been smoking and his mittens lay on a chair beside him. He had put sum wood in the stove and it was about half burned up. The house was warm so I don't think he had been dead long. He went out in the terable cold storm the day before and cut a part of a load of wood and we had a vary hard cold wind from the north west and he caught cold and it went to his heart.

I have 3 children left-the oldest daughter 63. A son 61. And the youngest daughter about 44. She has 3 children-the oldest was just married last fall and the next a daughter 16. Last a sone 15 years. They all live in Plainwell. The 2 are tending school. Dorothy will graduate this year. Evalyn the oldest-works in the asylum in Kalamazoo now over 3 years. Lelia, their mother works in the paper mill in Plainwell now for 5 years or more. My oldest daughter is working in Kalamazoo. This makes 15 weeks taking cair of a little boy and doing housework. She has lost hir home and is trying to take cair of hirself. She has 1 married daughter in Plainwell. I am 82 years old the 12 of last December. I keep 12 hens and 2 kittens, do my washing and house work and sewing besides bringing in wood and water. I get pretty tired some times but rest up and go on. I have my garden. Year before last I had a nice garden-but last year it did not do so well it was so dry. But I don't know if I shall do much more in the garden or not another year if I live. I have curvature of the spine quite bad and cramps in my back at night-but I get up and doctor myself and go back to bed again. I don't think I will ever rust out if I work like I halve. My son is in MO. He is married the second time and he has 2 children both married. I halve had a pretty hard life but I like to be able to work if I don't work too hard. I am contented in my own home, of corse it gets lonesome when night comes, but the next morning I am up to build my fires and get my breakfast and do chores but I don't know how long it will be that way. Well I guess you will be tired of reading my letter but write me again.

Dear Cousin Gussy,

I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. I should halve answered before but halve been trying to clean house a little and paper sum but I was so slow this year I can not do vary much in a day and over a week ago I fell from the doorstep lost my balance and hurt my right side and my back terably and my right hand and wrist. It seemed as though my back was nearly broken for a few minutes. I could not get up for quite a while on acount of my back. I halve curvature of the spine and if I fall it always seems to hurt my back. My oldest daughter Edith is living with me and she helped me what she could, but I halve not been in bed. I keep doing what I can. It is not best for one to give up, my hand and wrist is sum lame yet, but I received another letter from Cousin Theodore Wilson this week and he wanted to hear from me so I rote him a long letter and am sending it today. He sent me a snapshot picture of him and his wife and the Raraton River whare it was taken and I was so pleased to see it. I halve heard my mother and father tell about it so many times. You ask me about your grandfathers age. I halve no record of his death but halve of his birth. He was born April 16, 1808 which I think I sent you in my first letter I rote you. I cant rember when your grandfather died but don't think it was a vary great while before my father brought your mother and Catharine home with him, your mothers sister. Your grandfathers first wifes name was Fenton but I don't know hir given name. I think your Aunt Mary Fritts would know she was your Grandfathers youngest daughter by his second wife. I do not hear from hir only through Iva Lambert as I halve not written hir she was hear for a short time once with Ivas mother. I should halve written hir but halve a good many to write to and halve negglected to do it. I do not halve the record of your mothers sister Kate or hir burial but John Miner would know if you write him. I do not see them they do not visit me and they are only about 3 miles away and halve an oughto to go with and I halvent any way to go unless I catch a ride any more. Your great grandfather (he was born December 15,1780) was Henry Wilson and his first wifes name was Catharin Cotterell she was born December 1, 1780. I think Theodore Wilson knows thair deaths. I halve Hetty Elizabeth Wilsons name on the birth list she was grandfathers first chile but I do not know any more than that but that she died young. I halve heard my father speak of hir. I halve hird my mother speak of the Sopers bit can not rember any more than that about it. I think you had better ask him to bring or send you the letter I halve written you as I halve written so much I cant rember now. How far does he live from you. I think you should visit one another more to know about the people. I presume you do get lonesome not seein any of your people often. I know I do sinse my brothers and sisters are all gone. I am glad you halve a radio. I halve not got any or electricity either. It goes by my house but I am not able to halve it. I would like to see you send me a snap shot of yourself. I would like one vary much. I will try and get the mail man so good by from Emma Hall.

Dear Cousin, (Gussie Stelle)

I received your 2 letters and 1 card and was glad to hear from you and that you are well. I halve neglected writing you. I halve a good many to write to and I receive a good many letters from my people and friends in different states. I halve letters from the Paciffic Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and they are mixed in between. I had a birthday shower of cards from 61 people last December 12th I was 84 years old and thair was 80 people we counted that had something to say. Sum sent cards I did not know but new my daughters. So I was blessed for once in my life it did me a lot of good to think so many thought of me.

I was not vary well last Saturday night I had a spell of cholary morbus, but I got rest and halve felt better sinse. We halve both been halving colds and Edith has a touch of bronchitis yesterday and this morning. She has go cold I think from mopping and washing, but are not so bad. Last night she went to Kalamazoo to church 8 miles from hear and did not get home until 11 o'clock and I set up writing a letter to my grandson and wife and than little daughter that has written me 2 letters and wanted me to write hir. They live at Keyport, Wash. I halve never seen the mother and great-grandchild she is 10 years old. I halve 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren and it keeps me busy sumtimes. I will say I halve not seen or heard any thing of John Miners folks this winter. They never come to see me cinse your Aunt Kate Miner died. Thair son and wife live with them and thair oldest son lived in Holland Michigan the last I knew and I want to tell you I had a letter from Iva Lambert. She is your grandfathers grandchild and hir address is Goodals, Michigan. Sheis the one I told you to write to sum time ago and all the one I write to near whare your Grandfather lived she is at the Poor house yet and siad she would stay thair as long as times are as they are now. She is overseer thair for many years, and I rote hir to find out about hir Aunt Mary Fritts was, she was your Grandfather Robert Wilsons youngest daughter and she rote me back that Mary died a year ago this coming spring now I do not know whare your grandfather and wives are buried but I think in sum semetary near whare he lived and I think that Iva Lambert can tell you all about it or John Miner can and I think she can tell you what the grandmothers name was. Hir given name was Sophiah I think but do not know hir sirname, and I cant think what your own mothers mothers name was unless it was Fenton. I did not know hir given name and never saw hir. I think if you write Iva you will find out and I would not put it off for if anything happened hir you might never know. She is all the one I knew now of your grandfathers family that I write to. We had a blizzard last week and the banks are piled high on the side my mail box is on and I froze so hard I could not move the snow until this morning. I halve shoveled a little in the path to the road but I am not strong enough to do such work any more. I give out. It is thawing and snowing again this afternoon. I was glad you could go to Theodores and halve a visit with them and as his wife had to go away it was nice that you could go and help them out and I think they appreciated it to halve some one they knew and for Frank Breece I am shurly sorry for him in his old age to hear his son is using him in the way you say he is. I don't think he has much love or feeling for his father now in his second child hood to use him in that way. It looks to me as they call it hear thair is a nigger in the fence and sum one should get the officers after him and his wife if they are doing as you say and investigate what was going on in that appartment and let Frank tell his story to some one that can handle his son. If the other son knew what they were doing maby he would see to it or some of his neighbors it is not right for that old father to be used that way. He cant help himself now and about his wife it is terable to be treated like you say whe was but that is the way sum of the children are treating thair parents I guess. Frank has been to easey with him and he might not liked his step mother. The other son Everett must halve thot something of his step mother or he would not halve been out to hir funeral. If Willie took his fathers money and would not let him halve it that shows he was not doing right for now he is getting old and needs some one to help him a long instead of causing him trouble and I think the lord is the one that will settle it. The paper said they had tried everything else and that they had better turn to the lord.

I think the ??? ones in the place he gets his pention from would look after Frank and his money if they were notified. But it isnt up to me to say what I would do. I halve never seen any of them but I was much interested in Aunt Mariah Breece and halve written hir many a letter for my

I think the ??? ones in the place he gets his pention from would look after Frank and his money if they were notified. But it isnt up to me to say what I would do. I halve never seen any of them but I was much interested in Aunt Mariah Breece and halve written hir many a letter for my father and mother and went on horseback when a child to mail them and get mail at post office and the old store is still thair and they are doing sum business still whare the post office was years ago.

We had a nice winter but a week or more ago we had a blizzard and snowstorm and it rained and froze so the roads halve been terably icy but we halve had sum warmer weather for 2 days that has thawed the worst of the ice. I take a stick or icebreaker along when I go out after mail and to feed my chickens and other places. I am not so shure on foot any more, but I am out about everyday. My daughter Edith has bronchitis yesterday and today.

Yes, that was nice house of Grandfather Henry Wilsons and you know he was a blacksmith by traid. I halve heard my father say and I think he was quite full of fun as father said the boys usto come and rassel with Grandfather. How I wish I could see one of his pictures if he ever had any taken. When you write me let me know if Willie has any children. No one has said he has. He probably will get used his pay back for what he is doing to his father. I am shurley sorry for old people when they cant help themselves. It would halve been nice chance for you to Michigan with that man you told of going to Holland Mich. I was at Holland a year or so ago when thair tulips are in blossom. I went with my 2 daughters and a man that took us in his car. It's a real dutch town. I am glad to hear Theodore is feeling better. He has written me cinse you left thair.

Well, I halve written you a long letter and will close by saying good morning with love from

Emma Hall

September 3, 1939

Dear Cousins, (Theodore and Anna)

I was so glad to hear from you once more. I had been saying I must write Theodore a letter in answer to his last one I received. I am sorry he is not able to write me, but Anna you helped me right out and Theodore you will probably get stronger soon and can write again at least I hope so for we halve all enjoyed both your letters so much. My pen does not work good. Thair is an acid they put in ink that just ruins the steel pens. Well I halve been alone a good deal of the time now for 2 or more weeks as by daughter Edith has been helping out at my nieces house. They took thair 8 year old boy to the hospital 3 weeks ago for an operation for a double rupture and his mother has had to be gone so much they had to halve help. Now they halve brought him home nearly a week ago. He is doing as well as could be expected but will halve to ly in bed another week. Edith gets tired as hir feet and limbs are so bad she has ruined he feet standing and walking on cement floors and side walks. When she lived in Kalamazoo she sold readymade dresses for 10 years and traveling and climing steps has about done her up.

Well this little boys mother was going around the cows in the barn and thair big black chow dog came in and scart a cow, and she kicked and struck the boys mother on hir leg above her knee and broke the ligamants loos on hir legg and she has been to Dr and had it dressed with a bandage and walks with a cane for a whil but she is sum better now.

Edith does not know if she will go back or not this week. It is hard to get any one to help out ??? or wimmen. Everyone has a job at something else. I was not vary well about 2 weeks ago I think I started in with the Flew, but I had medicine in the house to take so I am better. So I got a ride to one of the neighbors and took my straw bed along to a new straw stack and filled it there. They tied it on top thair car and I bought a bushel of wheat and they loaded it in the car and we got in and came a sailing home. I am glad I got it as it begins to act like rain. I don't think thair is any one around that uses straw for beds now, but I like it for myself.

Today we had peaches off our little seedling peach tree we planted about 8 years ago from the pits. They were just loaded but the rose bugs was so thick they ate about half of them and then thair was too many on the tow so they are not as large as though they had bin thinned again. Thair is a big crop of apples and peaches and other fruit this year.

Now I must tell you about my oldest sister Catharine Sherman daughter that has come from Fla this summer to visit all of us. Hir name now is Kate Crilley. She is a widow and lives with hir son on a little about 14 miles from Tampa, Fla. She had 1 daughter but she had TB and died. She has 1 grandson and hir youngest brother Henry Sherman living in Tampa, Fla. She is my sisters youngest daughter and is a lovely Christian woman and we all think so much of hir coming to visit us all. She has been to visit us this last week but my daughter was away that day do she did not see hir vary long. My oldest brother only son Fred Wilson and wife went and took hir to Iowa about 3 weeks ago to hir old home whare she was born in Mills County, Iowa. She said she only saw 1 person she knew when she lived thair. It has been so many years they halve either died or moved away. They visited my youngest brothers daughter and husband. Hir name is Jennie Pitzer. Now they live on a rented farm about 40 miles this side of Kates old home. She said they had a vary nice time and Jennie was so glad to see them. Thair isnt any of Jennies sisters living that she knows of and hir father and mother are both dead. They went from Jennies to Kates brothers old home whare his wife and daughter lives on the farm. Hir oldest brother Merrill Sherman is dead. Then from thair to Sioux City Iowa they visited my sister Martha Olivers daughter for a short time. Then they went back to Jennie Pitzers and returned home.

She said she was going the next day to my old childhood home to my nieces Mable Websters. She is my oldest brother Frank second daughter. Sister to Fred Wilson. You know I sent you a snap shot of them at the Wilson reunion.

When Kate leaves Mables she was going to Emmet Blisses. He is my sister Marys son. He is in the picture stand on the right hand side back of Mable and Myrtle. They are brother Franks daughters.

Kate was hear to the Wilson reunion this year thair was about 35 that attended. Sum of them did not come. I wish you might halve been hear to attend. It is a lovely spot we go to Millum (?) Park with a nice crick and swimming pools and stove maid of stone mason work and tables and benches. Part of it is on a hill and stone walks and flowers and in a grove of oaks and other kinds of trees. They halve a big house on the hill and a well fixed with the Old Oken Bucket and Windless, and I saw 2 ox yokes hanging up on the log houses and they maid me think of old times. I must tell you that crops are good hear and Kate said corn stalks stood 10 feet tall in Iowa and they took a snap shot of Fred Wilson standing by it. He is so short he must halve looked a little like Tom Thum I saw in the circus when I was a young girl.

It is a great country in Iowa to raise corn and fat cattle and hogs. I halve lived west-2 years. The soil is black. They usto say the ground did not need furtilizer on it-it was so ritch.

Monday afternoon. As I did not finish my talk yesterday I will now. Today is Labor Day, but I stayed at home. Edith went back and worked sum this forenoon but came home and did her washing this afternoon. Last night it blew and thundered and lightened terible and the wind has blown hard all day today. It has been vary hot-merkury was at 90 and at 80 just before dark. I am glad your son came to visit you. It would be nice if he could live near you. Now you kneed help.

I am glad Frank Breece is so happy in his old age he will get along much better. That was pretty sudden his son Willie passing out so sudden. Hew must halve had heart trouble. Thair is so many passing out this way with that. Gussie rote me a letter not long ago but I halvent answered it yet. Well it is getting tords winter again and my daughter does to. If we had a boy or man to get our water and shovels paths we would not dread it so bad.

Now I must tell you I halve 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and I think that is quite a good many. Thair has been 2 born this summer and I'm expecting 2 more right now, but halve not heard yet. But it don't make me feel old yet. One think I don't halve the cair of them that I could not stand long. We hear the war has begun over in the old country and every one we hear of is sorry, but hope the U.S. will stay out of it. We do not want it -it is hard times enough now.

Well I halve written you a long letter. I will close for this time and hopeing you will be much better and will write again I will say good night with much love to you both from

Emmal Hall
