Mrs Eckstein was born in Austria in 1811 and was consequently over eighty years of age. In the spring of 1867 she came to America and the same year settled near New Ulm. Up to five years ago she had resided continuously on a farm near Fort Ridgely, and then, overcome with age and industrious toil, she retired to the city to live with her grandchildren, of whom Andrew J., Jos. A. and Wenzel Eckstein are now residents of New Ulm. During her long life, she was always known as an estimable woman of untiring energy and noble character. Eighty years gave her a reputation among her acquaintances that was enviable. The funeral will be held this morning at 9 o'clock from the Catholic church." The deceased was born in the village of Runitz, Bohemia, on the 26th of June, 1858, and came with her parents to America in 1864. Her first home in this country was on a farm in Sigel and here she spent, almost uninterruptedly, the remaining days of her life, marrying Mr. Seifert in October, 1879. Ten children were born to her, all of whom are living. They are William, Charles, Ida, Alex, Frieda and Benjamin, who are still at home, and Henry G., a druggist at Sherburne, Mrs. Frank Forster, Mrs Hubert G. Theisen and Mrs. Henry Holm. she also leaves her mother and four brothers, Joseph A., Andrew J. and W.T. Eckstein of New Ulm and Geo. C. Eckstein of Sigel. Throughout her illness, which extended over nearly two years, she was a patient sufferer and never, for a moment, gave up hope of her ultimate recovery. Her reputation in the community in which she spent the greater portion of her life was that of a woman of noble traits, a kindly mother and a neighbor whom everybody esteemed. Her funeral occurred from the Holy Trinity church in this city Saturday forenoon. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Leitschuh, Dr. V. J. Bruckbauer, Fred Michaelson, Henry R. Hillesheim, Arnold Losleben and P. J. Guldan. A resident of Sleepy Eye for many years, Mrs. Rubey had been living with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Schroepfer, New Ulm, the past few months. She had been hospitalized for two weeks. Deceased, nee Mary Petsinger, was born October 25, 1867 at Lake City and came to Sleepy Eye in 1883. She married at St. Mary's church in 1982 to Anton Rubey who passed away in 1942. Two sons preceded her in death. Mrs. Norbert Schroepfer (Agnes) is the only living child. There are four grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. The Rubey's lived in Stark Township until 1921 when they retired and moved to a home on East Elm. He had been hospitalized six weeks and passed away Monday at 3:00 am. Despite his 79 years and 7 months he remained in good health until April of this year. Once he began failing, his condition became gradually more complicated, with the infirmities of old age causing his death. A Solemn High Mass was read this morning at Ten at St. Mary's church. Deceased was born in Austria, February 22, 1863. At the age of eight years he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel Rubey <../wenzel.html>, to Brown County. They settled five miles southeast of Sleepy Eye (Stark township) which at that time was rolling prairie land and wilderness. His father cleared a place for the family and broke the first ground. The 253 acres farm has always remained in the Rubey family, at present it is occupied by Henry Rubey. When his father died in 1890, Anton took over management of the farm. Two years later he was joined in marriage to Mary Petsinger at St. Mary's church by Rev. Pax. They remained on the home place until 1921 when they retired from active farming and moved to town. During his many years in town he spent sometime each summer assisting with the harvest. Besides his wife and son Henry, a daughter, Mrs. Norbert Schroepfer (Agnes) of Sigel township survives. One son Leo passed on in 1911 when struck by lightning. During his years in Stark township, deceased was active in the life of the community. He served 21 years as treasure of that township and was a member of District No. 11 school board for 20 years. Notes for LEO RUBEY: [Kohlbeck.ged] TOD: Leo Rubey Sleepy Eye Herald 1911 A Sad Death About 4 o'clock last Thursday afternoon, July 27th, just after the rain storm, Leo Rubey, the 16 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Rubey, of Iberia was killed by lightning. The sad and deplorable death occurred on the public road near the farm home of the parents of the boy. During the storm, which was accompanied by wind, a large tree had been blown down across the public road and Mr. Rubey in company with his two sons, Henry and Leo and little daughter went out to the road about forty rods from the house to remove the tree, (as it obstructed the road) before any team came that way. After Examining the tree and not being able to remove it without the aid of an axe to cut it, and rain was beginning to fall, Mr. Rubey started for the house and told the children to come along. The boys were behind him, when he heard a loud report resembling that of a pistol shot and in looking back saw Leo while running, fall face downward. He hastened to the side of the boy and sent Henry for cold water, which was brought in a couple minutes. The water was applied on the face and mouth of the boy in the hope of reviving him and for a moment Mr. Rubey thought life was returning, but it was only for a moment. Five minutes after the shock the boy had passed to the great beyond. Just before death, on being asked by his father if he could help himself said, "Yes Papa" and breathed his last. The body was removed to the house and a doctor summoned, buy after examining the body and learning the facts, nothing could have been done for him. Near where he was killed were telephone and barb wires were so charged by electric fluid that it jumped from the wire to the boy, giving him such a terrible shock that his body could not withstand it. Upon a close examination of the body no scratch or burn or any effect of the lighting could be found. Deceased was born Oct. 12, 1894 at Iberia. He was a bright and industrious boy of good habits and the pride of his parents. His sad and untimely death is a terrible loss to his parents. The funeral took place at St. Mary's church Monday morning at 9 o'clock, Rev. Stulz and Rev. Kern conducting the last sad rites of the church. It was the largest funeral we have witnessed in Sleepy Eye for many years. The family have the sincere sympathy in the terrible loss. Among the relatives of the bereaved family who were here to the funeral from other places were George Miller and Mrs. F.
