John G. Michel Family Tree
John G. Michel immigrated to U.S. from Hertnik, Saris Okres(county)N.E.Slovakia February 17, 1896 according to the U.S. Census 1910. He came with his younger brother, Peter, who was nine years old. They located in the vicinity of Bridgeport-Stratford for a short time. He was handsome with brown hair and eyes. He met Maria Leska in Bridgeport and arranged for her to take a train to Wilkes Barre in February, 1903. They signed their marriage certificate at the Luzerne County Courthouse , Wilkes Barre on February 12, 1903. They were married at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church, Grove St. Edwardsville February 21, 1903. They boarded with friends on Vaughn St., Luzerne until John built their home in 1904, at 757 Miller St., Luzerne where he lived until his death. He also built a double block house at 776-778 Miller St. He also provided the land across from his (774 Miller St.) to his daughter, Johanna, and her husband, John Zacryshic where they built their home in 1929. Their Stephen and daughter Johanna were baptized in Sts. Cyril & Methodius Church. When the church burned in 1907 the records were lost. When Stephen sent for his birth certificate in Harrisburg a mistake was made in spelling Michel. It was spelled Michaels. He insisted that his brothers and sisters also use the surname Michaels. His brother, Joseph Michaels, signed his father's death certificate on December 25, 1955. Joseph Faust, 306 Grove St., Kingston was the funeral director but since his "parlor" was under renovation the viewing was held at John C. Maher Funeral Home, 360 North Maple Ave., Kingston. Mr. Faust printed the name John G. Michaels on the death certificate since he knew Steve Michaels with the spelling of " Michaels." This cause a lot of confusion. |
