On November 28,1656, only thirty six years after the pilgrims landed,a little boy, Edward
Goodson was about ten years old when he arrived in America from England.Edward was
"sponsored" by a Mr. William Blackey.They lived in Isle of Wight County Virginia,Where it is
recorded that Edward owned fifty acres of land.
Sometime before 1702 Edward met and married Mary Thomas,the daughter of Phillip and Sarah Thomas.Mary's parents had settled in Virginia prior to 1635.
Edward and Mary Thomas Goodson raised four children,Edward, Jr., George, Joan & Martha.Edward, Jr. & George married the Mandue sisters,Edward, Jr. married Mary in 1737 and probably about that time was when George married Sarah.George and Sarah are direct ancestors of Hoyt Mayfield Goodson.
In 1714 Edward acquired a land grant of 475 acres in Isle of Wight County.
This line from Edward,George,Matthew and Joel began in Virginia in 1656 and moved through North Carolina and South Carolina, ending in Cass County (now Bartow County) Georgia in 1850.
