Notes for W
ILLIS CATRETT:
In about 1834 Willis came to Pike Co., Alabama in a movement with his Father,
brothers, sisters, uncles, cousins and other relatives. During the Creek War of 1836-37, Willis
Participated in a draft meeting to form a military unit, and served as a private in a Company commanded
by Capt. John A. Stringer in Denson's
Alabama Infantry. Prior to the war Willis had acquired 40 Acres of land in section 19, Township 10,
Range 21 east by patient from the government. Then during and after the war he obtained 40 acres in
Section 19, Township 10,Range21 East; and 43 acres in Section 24, Township 10, Range20 East. One of
the Last parcels was probably a military land bounty patent for his services in the war. From 1847 to 1850
Willis Acquired another 172 acres by patent in section24. township 10, range 20 East; and purchased
another 400 acres from private individuals in neighboring sections.
Willis was a large scale farmer in Pike Co. until 1863, when he sold out and moved to Stockton in
Baldwin Co, Al. where he had four brothers and two sisters living , John 1820 ,William 1824, Joseph
1830, Jesse Henry 1834, Mary Ann 1824, Kitsey Ann 1814, He moved his family from Troy in ox wagons
and wagons pulled by mule teams, bringing cattle, hogs, horses, and chickens. He purchased 840 acres of
land from the Michael Melton heirs for $10,450 , southeast of and west sides of Ten saw lake . The Willis
Catrett home place was located east of the row of pines trees east of Bryant Home on Baldwin Co., road
21, the Bryant Landing road.

The Old Catrett Cemetery Was located on the Willis Catrett Farm, he and his wife Ann were buried their,
After their deaths the farm was sold to William I. and Percy A. Bryant by his Son-in-law Allen D.
Simmons.
Julia C. Catrett born 1900, granddaughter of Willis ,told me the following story,
Allen Simmons could not read or write but stipulated verbally that fifty acres
surrounding the Catrett Cemetery would not be included in the sale of the farm.
This stipulation was not in the deed , for the next Twenty-Five years Alexander Robert , Willis's Son tried
to buy the property the Cemetery was on, some of Willis decedents are continuing to try.
I visited the Cemetery which is in a field, no one Had been there since Hurricane Fredrick in1979,
Willis tombstone had been knocked over by a tree, we dug it out cleaned it up and repositioned it, their
were only three graves that we could recognize all others had had wooden crosses and not otherwise
marked, the cemetery was on private property and i got permission from the Bryants to see if i could
locate it.
