Jesse enlisted in the Civil War on July 29,1861 as a Private in company-H-186 Regiment of Alabama
Volunteers under Captain J.H. Justice. Four of Jesse's brothers also enlisted. During the battle of
Chickamunga on September 19-20,
1863 among the 17,000 causalities under General Bragg were Jesse and his brother John Thomas Catrett
Jr. (1827-1863) John was mortally wounded and Jesse received severe wounds in his left shoulder and
right leg. This costly southern victory temporarily trapped General Rosecrans in Chattanooga only to see
Monk of Tennessee fall into northern hands two months later.

Jesse's slow healing wounds and failing health led to dysentery and he was furloughed in the spring of
1864. Returning home Jesse's recuperated and fathered his second son Jesse Henry Catrett Jr. who would
be born in February 1865. By early summer Jesse was well enough and returned to his unit which was
outside of Atlanta Georgia.

captured near Atlanta August 5, 1864 and imprisoned at
Louisville, Kentucky. Later he was transferred to Chase Maryland until the end of the war. he arrived
home in June 1865 and was welcomed by his wife Polly and his two sons Bill and Jesse Jr.
