Notes for C
ECIL WILLIAM SPICER, ^:[Spicer Family File.FTW]
What kind of man was my grandfather Cecil?
When I was 15 I had a cyst removed from my left wrist. After the surgery and when I was put in a regular room they were still having trouble getting me to wake up. They thought I just needed to sleep off the anesthesia but the truth is I was severely dehydrated. The staff wouldn't tell my parents what was going on, just that they couldn't see me until I was fully awake so my parents were left worrying in the waiting room for over 6 hours.
In the meantime my grandpa who we called Gop or Goppy had also tried to see me and like my parents he was turned away at the nurses station. So there I was alone drifting in and out of consciousness. I remember struggling to wake up and being so frightened that I couldn't reach that state of consciousness. Even in that hazy state I knew enough to be scared that something wasn't right but not quite awake enough to do anything about it. Then suddenly through the fog in my brain I heard my grandpa Gop's sweet soothing voice telling me I was going to be OK because he was there for me now.
Then a nurse came into my room. She was angry and told him I wasn't allowed visitors and ordered him to leave. He refused and began raging at her about the inadequate care I was getting. Couldn't they see the reason I wasn't coming to was because I was severely dehydrated!! I was not having trouble coming out of the anesthesia, I was so dehydrated I couldn't regain consciousness! The nursed finally took a good looked at me. My lips were cracked, my skin gray and dry - I must have looked awful because the next thing I knew I was being jabbed with needles in both arms as they set me up for IV's. They pushed the fluids in me as fast as they could and soon I was able to become fully alert.
My grandfather had a severe heart problem and he was not suppose to climb stairs or do anything that would strain his heart yet when he got turned away at the nurses station he went down to the main floor, found a back stairway and walked up 3 flights of stairs in order find me. And he snuck in and out of rooms until he did find me! His perseverance probably saved my life.
Of course my mom was extremely grateful that her stubborn father was so determined to see me that he snuck his way in, but she was also very upset that he had climbed all of those stairs and risked his own life in order to get to me. And that is the kind of man my grandpa, my "Goppy", Cecil William Spicer was.

December 1997
I grew up in South Minneapolis and lived there about 20 years. Dad worked on the
Rock Island Rail Road. My [first] jobs were mowing lawns, shoveling sidewalks,
babysitting and *pin setting at the bowling alley. Then at 16 I got a job at a restaurant in
down town Minneapolis, first as a bus boy (cleaning off tables) then as a cook. I made
$1.10 an hour. I did this for 9 months. At age 17 I got a job as an electrician’s helper
(apprentice) and finally as an electrician. I got laid off after 13 years. As an electrician’s
helper I made $1.67 an hour and I ended up making $5.00 an hour before I was laid off
the railroad.
Growing up in the cities we had lots of friends. We had our neighborhood groups.
We didn’t call them gangs back then and we were pretty much friendly with each other
and we really didn’t get into much trouble as far as breaking the law because we were
taught to respect the law, other people and their belongings. Very few neighbors owned
cars and we used the ‘street cars’ mostly as our means of transportation. Of course we all
had bikes and I bought my first car at age 17, a 1937 blue 4 door Plymouth.
I met my wife Juanita, (Bunny), when the Spicer’s moved in two doors away from
us. I think she was about 3 or 4 years old so you might as well say we’ve known each
other all of our lives. She was 16 and I was 18 when we were married. I was bringing
home about $220.00 a month back then, (netted $110.00 every 2 weeks.) Bunny **car
hopped a lot to help support our fast growing family.
All of our family lived close by each other so we did a lot together which carried on
into our adult life. We all got a long just fine and forty some years later we still hold a
strong family tie. Hopefully our children and their children will follow or example of a
loving, caring family. If you have that your very fortunate.
I never had a lot of money-but when you have the kind of love I have known it
makes me the richest man I know.

*NOTE* Dad has often spoke of the love he has for his family. Ma, us kids, our spouses,
and his grandkids (24 at this writing.) He took every opportunity to brag to co-workers
and let them know how proud he was of even our smallest accomplishments. He also had
a special bond with his brothers-in law, calling them his brothers.
When Roger was laid off the Rock Island Rail Road after 13 years, he went on to work at
World Wide Transportation (3 years), the Ford Motor Company plant (3 years), and was a
self employed carpenter in Kennewick Washington (about 3 years) and finally spent well
over 20 years as a school custodian at West View Elementary in Apple Valley Minnesota.
Throughout his life Dad has enjoyed numerous kinds of activities and has passed many of
these passions down to his children including reading (mostly Louis L’Amour westerns),
hunting, fishing, sketching wildlife, camping, and writing poetry. Dad also loves animals
and while his children were growing up we were fortunate enough to be exposed to great
variety of wild life in their own back yard. At one time or another he has raised or
nursed injured animals including, but not limited to, dogs, cats, ducks, peacocks, pigeons,
skunks, raccoons, a coyote, chickens, mice, ferrets, rabbits, a woodchuck, squirrels
(including one named Mr. Nibs), crows, several species of owls and hawks, not to the
variety of fish, snakes, frogs/toads, salamanders and just about anything else he or his
children could get their hands on.

Dad was the wealthiest man we knew. He knew he was blessed with the love and respect
of his wife and children, sons and daughters in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren
as well as his mom, Polly, sister Dorothy, sisters and brothers in-law, and his many nieces
and nephews. He was also loved by his many friends and co-workers. He was that rare
kind of special man who was never afraid to tell people how much they meant to him. We
too were all blessed to have known and loved him.
Dad loved his family and took great pride in the fact that, despite of size of his clan, he
was able to remain so close to us all. He never failed to brag to his co-workers that he
and Ma only had 30 or 40 of us over for the holidays. After a Thanksgiving or Christmas
dinner he’d sit down and write a list of who came over just so he could give the "gals" at
school an accurate account. He loved to relate to us the looks on peoples faces when he
would tell them he had 20 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children- then (like now), he’d
usually be able to add, "And there is another one on the way!"
Dad passed away at 8:30 PM on August 29, 1998. We were fortunate to have been able to
spend the last two weeks with him, to fight with him and for him, to take care of him and
show him how much he meant to us. We’re thankful that we were all able to spend his last
moments of life together with him, to tell him one last time how much we all love him.
Dad never failed to let us know how much he loved us and how proud he was of all of us.
He and Ma were blessed to have been able to spend most of their lives together with a
love that was strong and enduring. I believe I speak for all of his children when I say how
grateful we were to have had him for our dad. As Steve so aptly put it, Your [our] hero,
Dad.[Julie Knutson.FBK.FTW]
