* The August Koch Family of Wisconsin*

Updated December 6, 2007

August Koch immigrated from the Baden area of Southern Germany to the United States and Barton, Wisconsin in 1849. This was a time of great upheaval in Germany as Denmark and the various regional royalty in Germany fought to unite Germay under one banner and a central goverment. A great many of the common people lost their crops, food and money to their local princes who were fighting among themselves and against Denmark for dominence over the country.

Most of those leaving southern Germany were farmers who could no longer support their families. August came to Wisconsin where there were already a great many German families, some of which, I am sure, wrote to his family about the many possibilities immigrants could expect to find. He found a job in a grain mill and made enough money in two years to return to Germany and bring his family back. From then to now, the family has grown to where we now have more than 937 individuals and 298 marriages in the extended family and Koch Family Tree. Please review, enjoy and participate. The most important aspect of our lives is FAMILY and we must respect those who came before us. Thank you, Duane L. Koch
