Notes for William Ernest KOEHLER:
William had been hurt in an accident on the job site, but during off-hours, so he was not compensated by his employers. He was left slightly disabled, unable to perform his previous job.
In 1913, William's father, Charles, had divorced Katherine, the court having sufficient evidence to grant it to him, to the point where she had to pay his court costs.
She left for California sometime after this and some of the children, if not all followed her out there. William himself joined them at some point after the 1920 Fed. census, which records him at home in Warrick Co., IN. His daughter, Henrietta, was born in 1921. She was the last. In the 1929 Evansville, IN, Directory, his wife, Carrie, is the head of household.

Notes for Carrie Agnes HELMS:
Carrie (HELMS) Koehler was left with four young children early in the 1920's. She moved to Evansville to the site of what later became the grounds of Mead Johnson, later still Bristol-Meyers/Squibb.
She was estranged from her family due to a falling out with her mother, who is said to have been an older version of herself. This came from Lionel "Bud" Koehler, Carrie's oldest son, a young teen when his father left.
Carrie's family is said to have lived in the Yankeetown area of Warrick Co., IN.

Fred and Bud would talk about how cold it was in Minnesota during the harvest time. They traveled with their dad occasionally? during harvest time. WIlliam would run the large equipment, maybe the harvester. Bud would spend the summer with the HELMS, and Fred would stay with the Koehlers. Harry raised Henrietta he said. He would feed her. During school he would run home to feed her lunch. They were very poor and considered poor WHITE trash by the neighbors. When they moved to Evansville, Harry and Henrietta would go to the Colisium at Christmas to get free toys. He would get a baseball and Henrietta would get a doll.

Bud loved his grandma HELMS, but Carrie hated her. Bud had won a full scholarship and had to turn it down so he could stay home and help his mom.
