Notes for U
LRICH HIRZEL:
Ulrich Hirtzel was the youngest of ten children and was reared in the small village of Reihen,
a village of farmers whose farm land surrounded the village and located twenty miles southeast of the city of Heidelberg. He resided here until the time he emigrated to Pennsylvania, at the age of 22 years, on the Ship William and Sarah from Rotterdam, and qualified in Philadelphia, Sept.18,1727.
He was among the party headed by Rev. George Michael Weiss, who was from Eppingen a town near Reihen and who became the first pastor of the New Goshenhoppen Reformed Church, just west of present East Greenville, Penna., of today. Prof. William J. Hinke,Ph.D., in " A Hundred Years of
History in Old Goshenhoppen Reformed Church, 1730-183011 as recorded in The Perkiomen Region, Vol.4,No.1 - WN 15, states," That his companions were really Reformed people is proven by the fact that we find later four of them as members of the Reformed congregation at Philadelphia, three at Skippack, two at Conestoga(Laneaster), one at Great Swamp and six at Goshenhoppen, These last six were: John Frederick Hilligas, John Huth, John Michael Zimmerman, Benedict Strohm, John George Welcker and Ulrich Hertzel, " Another member of this party in 1727 was the brother of Ulrich,
Hans George Hirtzel who had settled in Franconia Township, Philadelphia County, now Montgomery. His name appears on a Petition for the establishment of Franconia Township, the Decree was entered in Court of Philadelphia on March 31,1731, He later removed from Franconia Township to Lower Saucon
Township, now Northampton County,, Penna., where many of his descendants are found.
Both Ulrich and George lived in the area by 1730 or before as is evid enced by the Indenture for the purchase of 103 acres by Christian Allebach from Henry Ruth and wife. Modlena, dated May 19,1730, On this Indenture Ulrich Hartzel is a witness along with John Isaac Klein and Jacob Wilhelm.
The tract was located in Lower Salford Township, and Indenture was proved before Rowland Evans on Sept.29,1750.
In 1734 Ulrich received a Warrant from the Proprietary's of the Province of Pennsylvania for a tract of 150+ acres in Upper Salford Township, "to pay quitrent of 1 half penny Sterling yearly per acre", and for which he received Patent No. 297... Dated July 3,176.1 (Bk.AA,Vol.l,p.459)On this his name is spelled Ulrich Hartzell
This 150 acres tract in Upper.Salford Township was the residence of Ulrich Hartzel from the time he settled on it, prior to 1734, how long before we do not know but we do know it was a common practice for the settlers to be settled on their tract before receiving title to it, and he resided there until his death on February 11, 1771, after having been ill for some time, as shown in his Will dated January 24,1771, where it states," being very sick and weak but of good understanding praised be to God for the same". His son John Mark Hartzel died about the same time and both were buried on the.same day.in the Deetz's Burying Ground. It is said that they were buried in the same grave, one above the other.
