KATE E. ZEINER

There is not much known of the younger years of Kate, the oldest child. She was born and raised in Spring Valley and married Charles E. Zeiner, a neighbor's son, whose father owned a large farm near Saucon. This farm was near a Milk Stop on the P. & R. R.R. just east of Center Valley, Penna. After Kate and Charles were married they moved to Philaaelphia where Charles engaged in a Livery Stable business with a partner for several years. The business was located at 19th and Turner, adjacent to the Oxford Hotel. The hotel was destroyed by fire and soon after the fire they disposed of the business. Charles then became a cemetery lot salesman, and, eventually became Superintendent of the Hillside Cemetery (Roslyn P. 0.) near Willow Grove, Penn., located eight or ten miles north of Philadelphia.
Kate was a very ambitious person and in her younger years she kept a boarding house at 1618 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia, Penn., where at least three of her brothers and sisters boarded. She also helped to raise three nephews and nieces. Kate was known to be a goodhearted, fiery red-head. Charles and Kate left no children and both are buried at Hillside Cemetery.

VALERIA EISENHART
a condensed version written. by her grandson
M. CASPER WOLFF d matilda

Valeria, the second daughter of Hiram an
Eisenhart was born and raised on her parents' farm ir, Spring Valley, Lehigh county, Penna. 'When of age she left home and went to her sister Kate; together they successfully ran the boarding house in Philadelphia until her marriage to Edward Bright; they set up housekeeping in Glenside, Pa., where they resided the . rest of their lives.
"My mother was apparently sheltered by my grandmother to the extent she did too much for her (Irma). 'We did not move into a new home my father had built for us, but remained with my grandparents while my father improved and modernized the old home. -My grandmother did all the cooking and baby sitting, while my brother and I were growing up. For iat)proxinately 22 years Valeria was the 'stay at home one' and kept the home. Between the two of them they maintained a comfortable hoi-ne. There was plenty of entertainment and grandmother was the manager for both of them.
When rrky i-nother fell down the cellar steps, and died as a result, at the age of 43, we boys were grown so this enabled my f ather to spend more time at his iob in Pittsburgh with the U. S. Engineers.
Valeria established herself with a veterinarian, with a large practice, and became a valuable asset to the doctor; and after his wife died, she (Valeria) lived in Glenside and during W. W. 11 maintained the house for him.
I married and lived close by so we saw much of one another. When my son was born she was elated, as if it was another part of her life, she bad to see him

robust person although she every day. She was not a
enjoyed good health. Outside of two accidents she had no need for a phys;cian. She lavished her love and affection on her grandsons' families and especially on her four great-grandcbildren. She lived with her two grandsons until her death. The records of Hillside Cemetery show that she was buried there 3-26-59 at 84 years of age.'

LUTHER W. EISENHART

Luther, like his sister Kate, was a red-head. The only two red-heads in the family. He was raised on his parents' farm in Spring Valley as were all of his sisters and brothers. He attended Kutztown State Normal School. For lack of funds he was forced to drop out of school and go to work. He went to Philadelphia and also roomed and boarded with his sister Kate. His job consisted of working as a driver for a Milk Delivery firm. While living in Philadelphia, he met and married Annie R. DuBree. After several years had passed he rented his father's farm in Spring Valley and worked the farm for a period of time. His next move was to Hellertown where be bought a home and obtained a job with the Bethlehem Steel Works operating a steam hammer. After working at this job for a period of time he became foreman of the "gang". He worked for Bethlehem Steel Works until his retirement.

After his retirement he spent some time working for Mr. Grace, who became president of Bethlehem Steel Works, on Mr. Grace's farm near Spring Valley.

He was a councilman of Hellertown for four years (1915-1919), also a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Fraternal Order of Free &- Accepted Masons.

Sports was his hobby and for many years he managed the very popular Hellertown baseball team.

GENEALOGY OF ELIZA E. STERNER

a biagraphical sketch submitted by her granddaughter

ETTA M. WHITESELL

Etta Marie Whitesell nee Fackenthal submits the following of her grandparents and uncle:

Charles William Rice, son of Sarah Ohl Rice and Manasses Rice, attented the public school at Blue Church, Pa.; the Kutztown State Normal School; taught school at Spring Valley, Pa.; married Zuri Caroline Sterner, Dec. 24, 1887, moved to Jersey City, N. J., where he worked for Price-Reed Co. (1886); A. A. Grilfing Iron Co. (1887); Frederick-Lossert Co. (1889); moved to Perth Amboy, N. J. (1890) where he worked for the Atlantic Terra-Cotta Co.; later moved to East Orange, N. J. where he continued to work as Traffic Manager in the New York City office until his death.

After his wife died in 1915, he married Minnie R. Smith in 1917.

The above information about my grandfather is from a little notebook my Uncle Jacob Rice gave me many years ago. Under our grandmother's family he only has names and dates of births and deaths, except for this paragraph:

"Levi Sterner and Eliza E. Eisenhart were married between 1850 and 1854 and started housekeeping near Easton, Pa. where he worked as a grist miller. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 they moved to Spring Valley, Pa. Here they lived as 'tillers of the soil' and were a blessing to their neighbors and friends. They suffered many a trial and temptation but the Good Lord kept them faithful until He called them to their final reward."
