I've always loved research and have become very interested in genealogy over the past two years. I have found out that my family has very strong roots in south-west Scotland, and now that I live in England I've become very interested in trying to add names and faces to the half-remembered tales of that beautiful part of the world told to me by my grandparents, who were all born in Galloway and South Ayrshire in the late 1800s. I am also interested in finding out more about the social history of the area and the lives my ancestors would have had. On my mother's side, they were tradespeople and mill workers from Ayr, and on my father's farm labourers from Galloway and Dumfriesshire, who then became railway workers. My family is typically working-class. There are no landed gentry, famous people or even members of the professional classes among them, so their records are sketchy when you go further back than 1840. What they did have was lots of children, so my family tree will be very wide. I would love to contact some of the descendants of my grandparents' hundreds of cousins and second cousins! |
