Ancestors of Arthur Leroy Rhoads

Generation No. 4

      8. Anthony Rhoads, born December 10, 1837 in Amity Township, Berks County, PA; died March 17, 1916 in Los Angeles, CA. He was the son of 16. Solomon Rhoads and 17. Rebecca Gerling. He married 9. Rebecca Kaufman October 13, 1859 in Emanuel Lutheran Church, Pottstown, PA.

      9. Rebecca Kaufman, born August 31, 1836 in Oley, Berks County, PA; died February 19, 1912. She was the daughter of 18. Isaac Keim Kaufman and 19. Lucy Ann Knabb.

Notes for Anthony Rhoads:
Anthony worked on a farm near Griesemersville. When the Civil War erupted, Isaac Kaufman (Rebecca's father) offered to pay Anthony's deferment so he wouldn't have to fight for the Union Army. Isaac thought it was irresponsible for Anthony to fight a war with two young children and a wife depending on him. Anthony refused and enlisted in Reading on October 27, 1861 as a private in the Pennsylvania 50th Regiment (93rd Regiment, Company B aka Ellsworth's Zouaves). He was discharged by general order on November 8, 1862, most likely as a result of being injured in the hip at the Battle of Seven Pines in Fair Oaks, Virginia - May 31, 1862. He carried the bullet in his body until the day he died.

Anthony's brothers, Darius and John, also enlisted with him. Darius served as a Lieutenant and rose to the rank of Captain before his discharge on July 8, 1862. John died on August 5, 1862 as a result of the wounds he received at the Battle of Seven Pines in Fair Oaks, VA.

Anthony's enlistment caused the break-up of the marriage. When he enlisted, his father-in-law told him to never come back. It's not clear if Anthony returned home to ask for a divorce or not. Anthony and Rebecca's divorce was finalized in Reading, PA on February 24, 1866.

Rebecca had a second husband, John Heckman, but no records of the marriage or of his birth and death dates exist. It is thought that he died before 1900 as Rebecca is listed as a widow in the 1900 census.

The 1870 Census has Anthony living near his parents in Amityville near the Earlville post office. Anthony was the census taker that year. (The 1870 Census starts with his parents' house with Anthony listed second as A.G. Rhoads.) He is listed as living with Rachel Rhoads, 66, a widowed aunt. (It's not known who Rachel's husband was.) Anthony's second wife, Lydia, and his sons John and Eugene also lived there. Lydia's siblings, Amandus and Sarah Hoffman, also lived with them. Anthony and Lydia married on June 7, 1867. Lydia died in 1899.

In the 1880 Census, Anthony is listed as living at Camp Branch, Cass County, Missouri. No record of where Lydia and the children were living. In the 1900 census, his residence is Pottawatomie Township, Coffey County, Kansas. In 1901, Anthony married Mary E. Sample in Rogers, Arkansas. They divorced.

In the 1910 census, Anthony and Rebecca are listed as living in the same household in Oley (along with their daughter Ledema, who was also divorced), although they never got re-married. (The 1910 census lists them as being married for 50 years. Apparently since both their second spouses were dead - with Anthony divorced from his third wife, Mary - they lied to the census taker. Did they want to avoid public censure for living together out of wedlock? Or did they let by-gones be by-gones and pick up where they left, assuming - and acting - as if they'd always been married?) It is presumed that Anthony and Rebecca lived together until Rebecca's death on February 19, 1912. Afterwards, Anthony moved to California, probably to live with one of his sons he had with Lydia Hoffman (they had 10 children altogether - 8 boys and 2 girls). On February 1, 1916, he married Ellen R. Miller in California. He died six weeks later in a Soldier's Home in California on March 17, 1916. Anthony is buried in the Los Angeles National Cemetery, Section 33, Row E, Grave 19.
