This is map of how large Howard's Grove Hospital, in Richmond, Virginia, became circa 1865. My 2nd great-grandfather, Absalom Koon, CSA died here of small pox in January or 1865. They burnt his body along with many others as they didn't have the time nor space to bury them. I am a Son of Confederate Veterans (SCV), by direct descent from him. Recently, relatives in North Florida, placed a monument next to his wife, Lavinia Amanda Taylor Koon (see www.wwtaylor.org and check for this under Lavinia Taylor Koon). I think this most appropriate, after finding out this information yesterday, due to my second cousin, once removed! Please see link below for additional information on this horrible and filthy place. HIs older brother, Frederick Hartwell Koon, served in the same company and is buried in the church he founded, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, just outside of Lake City, Florida. They came from South Carolina in the 1850s to North Florida. The house, on the former plantation, is, as far a I know still standing (as of 1990). What a find! In April of 1865, both the federal and confederate soldiers, were placed here. It is my understanding that they buried the federals and burnt the Confederates!
