To date, the Coram Families of New York and Virginia have their origins in Fauquier County, Virginia. They are of African/Occaneechi descent with relational ties to the Scottish/British/and Irish (?) landowners of that area. In the beginning of the 20th century, one branch of the Coram Family moved to Greenburgh/White Plains, NY. This site is primarily concerned with this branch of Corams and their relatives. Wellington and Thomas Coram (circa 1850's)were brothers and had at least two other brothers, James and Winston. James and Winston died in their early 20's (1882) and Wellington and Thomas married two sisters. Wellington married Elizabeth Grant. this was her second marriage. Thomas married Amanda Grant The Coram brother' parents were James and Anna Coram The elder Coram (James) mother was Margaret Coram (circa 1800) The Grant sister's mother was Martha Grant. Martha Grant's mother was Sarah Thomas (1800) It was Wellington and Elizabeth who moved to New York with their children (including children from Elizabeth's first marriage/Doyle). Some of their children were George, Ulysses, Frank, Jesse, Corneilius, and Henry Thomas and Amanda had Georgie, Sam, Wellington, Henry, Lucinia, Jack Thomas, Thomas U., and Winston Through the Grant sisters, the Corams are close kin to the Jenkins, Seatons, and to the Washingtons, Mudds, Weavers and others. If you have anything to add or clarify please email me. The above is just a brief overview of the tremendous amount of research that has been done on the Corams and on the many branches of the tree. Recently, family researchers, Sherrie Carter and Jamal Koram with the help of a Mr. Payne and Richard Jenkins, came across information that led to the "re-finding" of a graveyard which holds Sarah Thomas (1800-1884) and her son Richard Henry Grant (1825-1880). Richard is Martha Grant's brother. More information, photos, leads, and up to date family names and dates are needed. Feel free to call. |
