Notes for Lazar "Louis" (aka Ratcheskey) Pogeshafsky:
Dina and Lazar Pogochefsky arrived in Massachusetts around the turn of the century, where they had some relatives already settled, possible, Dina's younger sister Mollie Alpert.
Per Danny Gelmon, 5/2005: We have no idea where they came into North America, for sure, but we spoke with our cousin Dorothy Satim (daughter of Lottie), and she told us that Lazar came first, then Dina and the three older girls, wne to Amsterdam and stayed with friends or family? for about a year, then came to Boston, they probably arrived in 1903, becasue Eva was born in 1904. The Pogochefsky name mysteriously changed to Ratchesky.
Upon arriving they were told that they should use the name RATCHESKY, because it was a better name than Pogochefsky. Lazar's employment shows as a rag picker.
Dina's brother-in-law Joseph Jay Goodman, married to Rebecca, the youngest sister, worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and convinced Lazar to move to Alberta Province in Canada, where land was cheap. It turned out that the land was very rocky, and the only thing that they could grow there was more rocks.
