New Information!! (Dec. 1997)The KOSATKA Family contained here is mainly the US branch from the Chicago, Illinois area, with a group in Houston, Texas. Up until now, we have identified the patriarch as TOMAS KOSATKA, born in Nova Ves, near Protivin in Bohemia, cir. 1841.
However, we have extremely good new information from Marek Kosatka (discussed below) which gives us two more generations of history: Tomas's father Vojtech, and HIS father, Matej, both farmers in the Nova Ves area. We still have not verified the connection (brothers?) between Tomas and Frantisek (Frank), but we're working on it through Marek.
The attached data base was updated early December 1997, when I got some new information from a few of the troops. I also collected some additional tidbits elsewhere, but just never got around to updating THIS page until now, with the new data. We have recently discovered a possible relationship with a gentleman named Marek Kosatka, who lives in Prague, writes excellent English, and is the son and nephew respectively of Bedrich and Pavel Kosatka, both of whom I found in an internet search on the Civil Engineering staff of a University in Prague.
I have also discovered (very near me, in Virginia) a Cindy KOSCHATKA, which would have been the true original spelling of Kosatka. She has relatives by that name in Iowa and Wisconsin, and there *seems * to now be a much stronger connection,in the Protivin information.
This search was started by my Dad, Paul Thomas Kosatka, purely by "hand" and by letter-writing. The task fell to me when he died, and unfortunately, I had a major fire which destroyed most of the work, and we had to start all over. Now, I have come to know the obsessiveness, and failure-tolerance, required to do geneological research. Computers have made the job of presenting the work a lot easier, but it's still hard to find out who's who, and where they came from...
I will update this periodically, so please keep checking back. PLEASE NOTE!! There are three (3) links at the bottom of this page which will take you to my entire data base to date (December 1997). There are three (3) different formats available to you. Only the text is provided in these; but I have a lot of photos and other documents available as well -- they just don't transfer on this home page. Maybe someday I'll get motivated to make an independent page with *all* of the photos and stuff available, but it's a lot of work [any volunteers??]
All I ask in return is that *you* give to *me* copies of any letters, photos, documents, obits.... anything which helps to paint the fuller picture. I will scan them into the computer, and provide the full data base to any (Kosatka) who asks.
There are about 34 additional Kosatka's who show up in various telephone book searches -- mostly in Illinois, with some in Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Montana -- but who don't *seem* to be connected. But since most originate with connections to the Chicago "neighborhood", we *must* be hooked up somehow. (In geneological searches, such assumptions can be crazy-making...) Is there a JOHN Kosatka in your background? He seems to be one of the missing links, not yet located, who would bring a lot of these connections together.
Please... feel free to write or e-mail me ... I'll be glad to send you paper copies of the rather extensive family tree I've developed... it is the same data you will find on the link below, but on paper in a "tree" format. Enjoy... and please contribute any ideas, documents, stories, rumors... whatever helps to flesh out the stories... Thanks, and I hope to hear from you soon...
